Blog Day 28: Monday 20 April 2020

I have returned from my walk, just getting home before the rain by the looks of things.

I thought today that I would do some comparisons of corona virus infection and death rates by population for various countries and just see how we are doing (you can keep the accountant out of the office but you can't keep the office out of the accountant).  First column will be the country name, then population (rounded to the nearest million), then the number of infections followed by the percentage of infections to the population and lastly the number of deaths followed by the percentage of deaths to the population.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 20/04/2020
Country  Population Infected No Infected % Deaths No Deaths %
Australia 25,000,000 6,558 0.0262 71 0.00028
New Zealand 5,000,000 1,440 0.0288 12 0.00024
USA 331,000,000 763,836 0.2308 40,555 0.01225
UK 68,000,000 121,172 0.1782 16,060 0.02362
Italy 60,000,000 178,972 0.2983 23,660 0.03943
France 65,000,000 154,097 0.2371 19,718 0.03034
Spain 47,000,000 198,674 0.4227 20,453 0.04352
Sweden 10,000,000 14,385 0.1439 1,540
0.01540
I have included Sweden because they have followed a different path than most of the other countries and haven't instituted a stringent lockdown.  It is interesting that Sweden's infection rate is lower than the USA and the other European countries but their death rate whilst lower than the other European countries it is higher than the USA's.  Although the USA's raw infection and death figures are terrifying the percentages are lower or on a par with the European countries.

The thing to take away from all this is that Australia and New Zealand are so far a long way ahead of the pack.  Look at the 10's of thousands of deaths around the world and then look at our 71!  If we were experiencing the same death rate as Italy we would have close to 10,000 deaths by now.

Lets keep up the good work and not worry about whether we can play golf or not.

Current Virus Stats Day 105

Aus: 6,619 infected (+14 from previous day) - 73 deaths (increase 2)
Recovered: 4,124
World: 2,402,076

  1. Sweden is quite interesting when you compare them to their Nordic neighbours:
Norway, Denmark and Finland - these countries have a combined population of 16.7mil so about 60% larger than Sweden - They have a combined 18,245 cases and 614 deaths. They've also tested far more intensely than Sweden. Keep in mind that Sweden has a low population density - especially compared with Denmark - and a very high percentage of people living alone. Even with those natural advantages, with 500 to 600 new cases per day, it's looking like Sweden's decision to take a different approach could be deadly.

    1. What I have looked at didn't take into account environmental and cultural factors. But certainly highlights the dangers of the path that Sweden is taking, and thank goodness we didn't follow that path although some here were suggesting that we do so.

  2. The silence has been deafening hasn't it, well I'm still here. I have been in a little bit of shock recently having seen some posts about food. What tipped me over the edge is that someone actually mentioned they cooked Spam......sorry I just had to run to the toilet, I didn't want to vomit over the keyboard. I still feel a little dizzy but I think I can finish my comment. I cannot wait for our current situation to be eased, head up camping around lake Eildon and wait for the maestro to remove his stringed instrument from it's golden case and dazzle us with renditions from his vast vault of numbers. I'm sure we will all be comforted by his dulcet tones lulling us to sleep. It's a shame that after so many years he has kept this hidden from us, amazing.

My time has been taken up recently with cleaning my guns (all of them). I suspect civil war is just around the corner. The recent photograph of the USA holding demonstrations, armed with assault rifles, inspired me to think, the time is near.

Regardless of the alledged event in Tas, it sounds like it is pretty scary to be around Burnie at the moment. A classic example of why social distancing works if in fact it was a social gathering that caused the outbreak.

Spam, tinned mutton. Maybe if we have a depression I might look forward to something like that but until then, please, no more.

    1. One way to ease yourself into SPAM is to try it in batter and deep fried as sticks - think corn dog - had this at a Korean restaurant once - Koreans and Hawaiians good mad for SPAM.

Or you could look at these delightful options from esquire.

It's better than you might think!

    2. Welcome back, even my dulcet tones would be better than the dulcet tones we usually get around the campfire.

It was pretty scary around Burnie even before the virus.

When the "end of days" arrives people will be begging me for a piece of my tinned corned mutton let alone my can of Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie.
