Blog Day 49: Monday 11 May 2020

Relaxation of virus restrictions announced this morning by CD.  The main changes being households can have a maximum of five visitors, being family and/or friends, 10 people can attend outdoor events maintaining social distancing, but no relaxation on the rules around cafes, pubs and restaurants.  These condition to be maintained until the end of May.

No announcement as yet as to the return of students to schools, obviously the teacher's unions haven't given CD the go ahead for that as yet.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 11/05/2020
Country  Population Infected No Infected % Deaths No Deaths % Deaths Increase No Deaths Increase %
Australia 25,000,000 6,848 0.0274 97 0.00039 2 2
New Zealand 5,000,000 1,497 0.0299 21 0.00042 1 5
USA 331,000,000 1,367,638 0.4132 80,787 0.02441 11,189 16
UK 68,000,000 219,183 0.3223 31,855 0.04685 3,409 12
Italy 60,000,000 219,070 0.3651 30,560 0.05093 1,676 6
France 65,000,000 176,970 0.2723 26,380 0.04058 1,485 6
Spain 47,000,000 264,663 0.5631 26,621 0.05664 1,357 5
Sweden 10,000,000 26,322 0.2632 3,225 0.03225 546 20
All of the above countries, except Sweden have recorded less deaths in the last week than in the previous week.  Lets hope that the death rates continue to decline.

The Australian and New Zealand figures are still remarkably low.  Australia only recorded an increase of 26 infections from the previous week, most of these would have been in Victoria and most Victorian infections for the last week would have been as a result of the Cedar Meat cluster.  Very little in the way of untraced or random community transfer infections in Australia.

The USA still tops the least in number of infections and number of deaths, however the US rate of death per head of population is around half of that of the European countries in the above table.  Still when you look at these deaths in the tens of thousands it is hard to get your head around it and smetimes the death of 97 seems to be a bigger tragedy than the death of tens of thousands.

Current Virus Day Stats; Day 126

Vic: 1,494 (+7 from previous day) - 18 deaths (increase 0)
Aus: 6,947 (+8 from previous day) - 97 deaths (increase 0)
Recovered: 6,167
World: 4,101,482

  1. What was it the man with the mo once said - one death is a tragedy - 1,000,000 a statistic...

    1. You are right Andrew, there could have been a couple of men with mo's who made that comment.
