Blog Day 105: Monday 06 July 2020
After due consideration and taking into account the likely further increase in virus infections I decided not to go to work today or for the foreseeable future. My main concerns are travelling on public transport and mixing with folk in the office and in the office building. I could drive into the CBD and I understand that there is cheap parking but that doesn't remove the risk of infection once in the city.
Now, how is this for irony. On my walk today in the Centre Road shopping strip I came across a lady who had fallen and was unable to get back up. So in my efforts to assist her myself and another chap came to be far closer and more hands on with a stranger there and then than what would have happened if I had gone into the CBD.
We got her upright and offered further assistance, but she claimed to be OK and went on her way. I was going to describe her as elderly but I am a little cautious about using that description of someone these days. I think that she probably lives in some supported accommodation and I often see her in the street looking a little disheveled. Anyway I suppose that is my good deed for the day.
The news has just come through that the NSW/Victorian border will be closed from tomorrow night for an unstated period. Enforcement will be conducted by the NSW police on the NSW side of the border.
Of course there is a lot of drama around the lock down of the public housing towers. The towers have been locked down for a day and a half already people are claiming to be running out of food, prescription medicine, nappies and other essentials. Without being unkind, how many people would have less than 2 days supply of prescription medicine on hand?
Furthermore, the local inner city legal services have set up a hotline to assist tower residents who feel that they may have been hard done by or mistreated by the authorities during in the lockdown. Good to see the lawyers doing their bit in these troubled times.
Today's new infection figures are the highest for the pandemic. Victoria has recorded 127 new infections for the last 24 hours, of these 34 are from known sources, 40 from routine testing and 53 still under investigation. Of the new infections I think 35 came from the now locked down towers, The state has 645 active cases and in the last 24 hours completed over 25,000 tests. Sadly we have reported the first death for some time, a 91 year old male who was in hospital.
Corona Virus Daily Stats: Daily 182
Vic: 2,660 infected (+127 from yesterday) - deaths 21 (increase 1)

World: 11,556788 infected - 536,776 deaths (increase 3,303 since yesterday).
According to our news tonight, an interview with one of your tower tennants stated that there was people starving. I would like to think I could survive at least 24 hours in the same situation. We had 5,000 put into total quarantine and they managed to survive. Now thanks to workers at a Coles distribution centre in Vic. we again had quantity restrictions on tin fruit and frozen vegetables when I went shopping last Friday.
ReplyDeleteWe have just gone into stage 3 lockdown for another 6 weeks, good luck getting your fruit and vegies now.
DeleteDo I need to stock up on toilet paper again? Not worried about food, hopefully someone would bring a food parcel.
