Blog Day 130 - Saturday 01 August 2020

After yesterday's popular frivolities the blog is back to the dark world of corona virus today.

I went to Woolies supermarket yesterday and noted that some shelves were starting to look a bit empty but not the panic buying stuff of the original lockdown but more general items which makes me think that the problems are more on the supply side than panic buying.  In observing people at the checkout I got the impression that people were "stocking up" rather than panic buying.

On my  walk today apart from one push bike rider I observed only two people not wearing masks.  But it was OK as they were in the 3rd group of people excused from wearing a mask, those people carrying take away coffee cups.  I think that there is also now a 4th group exempted from the mask wearing rules that apply to the rest of us, those people wearing designer exercise wear but not actually exercising.

Now for some numbers (happy Andrew???).  Victoria recorded 397 new infections in the last 24 hours compared to 627 the previous day.  We will need to see some lower numbers for a few days to start to take any comfort from them.  Victoria reported 3 deaths in the last 24 hours and 8 in the day before that, taking our total number of deaths to 116, the majority of the deaths are still as a result of infections in nursing homes and aged care facilities.  I think that NSW has reported one death, their first in some time.

DD did mention this morning that there is some concern in Victoria over the number of community transmissions that haven't been able to be tracked to any known source and further concern that they don't know how many of these there are out in the community.  The state and federal governments have been in discussion and the feeling is that further restrictions may be announced on Sunday evening.  There is a possibility that there may be a limited lockdown of certain trouble spot industries, such as meatworks.  Anybody else rushing out to stock up on pork knuckles???

The daily world wide figures are hovering around the 280,000 plus new infections per day and 6,000 plus deaths per day.  If these figures are maintained the world death figures will exceed 700,000 in the next three or four days, now that is scary stuff.

Remember: to ask "are you OK"?, to work from home when you can, keep your vodka in the freezer, wash your hands, keep your distance, keep your mask on, sneeze into your elbow (yuk), don't sneeze with your mask on (yuk), don't touch your face, press the traffic light button with your foot, eat your vegies, don't ride your bike on the footpath, sanitize often, keep your glasses unfogged, obey the police at roadblocks, don't put your hat on the counter at the bakery (cause the lady will shout at you), don't go to work if you are crook, the lime in your V & T is a good source of vitamin C, don't go to a day spa and then boast about it on FB, pay with a card, don't use cash (because you are wearing a mask you could run away without paying) and be kind.

(Andrew suggested the pay with a card, I added the run away bit).
