Blog Day 131 - Sunday 02 August 2020

I've got a feeling in my water that this isn't going to be be a good day.  The premier's media conference isn't scheduled until later this afternoon and usually the later the conference the worse the message.  The news reports are suggesting 600+ unconfirmed new infections for the last 24 hours and 17 more deaths.

News agencies are reporting that we will shortly be going on to stage four lockdown or some components of it, which of course has initiated another round of panic buying with supermarkets apparently very busy this morning.

Talking about panic buying, my PC which is about seven years old has recently been increasingly temperamental and I am concerned that it is about to cark it on me.  If this happens during a stage four lockdown I might have difficulty getting a replacement, so today I am going out to Harvey Norman and Officeworks to have a look at a new computer.  Thinking about a new all-in-one, but what I get will possibly be dependent on what is available.  Both HN and OW are close to me and hopefully buying a computer is considered essential in this day and age.  Imaging 4 - 6 weeks in full lockdown without a computer.

3.00pm and the premier has just been on the wireless.  671 new virus infections reported for Victoria in the last 24 hours and seven deaths taking the total number of deaths to 123.  The deaths are still from the aged care sector.  Of the current active virus infections of 6,322 in Victoria 760 of these are classified as "mystery" infections.  A mystery infection is one where the source of the infection is unknown and cannot be traced.  Apparently it is this figure that is causing the real concern to the authorities.

The following is for metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.

The premier has announced a whole new range of restrictions for at least the next six weeks.  A State of Disaster has been declared from 8.00 this evening for six weeks.  Furthermore a curfew has been imposed between 8.00pm to 5.00am starting tonight.  You are not allowed outside your house between these hours apart from care giving/receiving or travelling to and from work.

Schools are returning to remote learning for all students from Wednesday.

As from tomorrow (I think) we will only be allowed to move within a 5km radius of home.  One person from each household will be able to shop once per day.  We will only be able to exercise for one hour within 5km of home in groups of 2 including family.  All organised exercise including golf, fishing etc is banned.

Weddings are banned entirely, so there is some good news here for some I daresay.

Limits on business and are to be announced tomorrow.  Apparently there will be three levels, businesses such as supermarkets, bottle shops, butchers etc able to trade as usual.  Some businesses will be put on limited production and other businesses will only be allowed to trade if they can operate from home.  Cafes etc will still be able to trade with take away and home delivery.

Regional Victoria is going on to stage three restrictions.

It will take some time to consider the repercussions of all of this, but they are going to be significant.

Daily figures as below.

Remember: to ask "are you OK"?, to work from home when you can, keep your vodka in the freezer, wash your hands, keep your distance, keep your mask on, sneeze into your elbow (yuk), don't sneeze with your mask on (yuk), don't touch your face, press the traffic light button with your foot, eat your vegies, don't ride your bike on the footpath, sanitize often, keep your glasses unfogged, obey the police at roadblocks, don't put your hat on the counter at the bakery (cause the lady will shout at you), don't go to work if you are crook, the lime in your V & T is a good source of vitamin C, don't go to a day spa and then boast about it on FB, pay with a card, don't use cash (because you are wearing a mask you could run away without paying) and be kind.

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am and be kind.

Comments

  1. I have some spare jigsaw puzzles I could send over if you don't get to replace your computer. At least bottle shops will still be open to help you fill in the long nights.
Please stay safe (keep away from the idiots that still don't seem to understand).

    1. Not sure about jigsaw puzzles, maybe a little frustrating at the moment. Thanks for your good wishes, pretty safe here in Fortress Sanity.
