Blog Day 142 - Thursday 13 August 2020

There is something strange, possibly even underhand, going on in this marvelous state of ours.  Not much detail available as yet but apparently some of the health minister's (Mikakos) responsibilities have been transferred to the the department of justice, whose minister's name I can't currently recall and can't be bothered looking up.  Now this is unusual in itself but even more unusual is that this transfer of responsibilities is back dated to 7th July.  I ask myself how can someone be responsible for something that they weren't responsible for at that time?

Anybody else getting a whiff of smoke and mirrors?  There will be more to come on this in due course.

Today's figures.  Victoria has reported 278 new infections for a total of 15,924 infections for the term of the pandemic. The number of new infections is the lowest since 20 July, starting to sound like good news. We have also reported 8 more deaths for a total of 275.  There are 662 Victorians in hospital, 37 of those in ICU and 25 on ventilators.

Unfortunately there is no good news with the international figures with 273,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 6,500 deaths for the same period.

In the last week there was a 1.8m increase in the number of infections worldwide.  Of this number the USA, Brazil and India reported 1.1m new infections equal to 62% of the world total.  Worldwide there were 752,000 deaths reported in total for the pandemic an increase of 41,000 for the week to date.  Of the total deaths of 752,000 the USA, Brazil, India and Mexico have reported 363,000 or 48% of the total.

The USA still leads the pack with the total number of deaths and the highest increase in the last week.

New Zealand is acting quickly to control an pocket of the virus in Auckland.  After going weeks without any new unaccounted for infections they have a cluster of 17, one of whom attended an aged care facility the day before they were confirmed to be infected.  These infections may have come from a family member handling an item in a cold store facility that may have had the virus on it.  This theory as to the source of the virus is unconfirmed as yet.

Sorry about the formatting of this table but not much I can do about it, I already create it in excel (so that the formulas work) and then cut and paste it into a word document which I then cut and paste into the blog page and it is still a dog's breakfast.  I will keep trying, by the time I get it right with a bit of luck this pandemic thing will be over. It looks perfect in the edit page!

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield and be kind.
