Blog Day 149 - Thursday 20 August 2020

Last evening I was having a look at the Flight Tracker 24 app and between 10.00pm and 11.00pm there were two charter flights out of Moorabbin flying into Devonport in Tasmanian.  Now, Tasmania is in pretty a state of serious border closure.  So what was these two flights doing flying there at that time of the night.

The first aircraft was a rather large commuter style aircraft (19 seater) flying across Bass Straight at about 25,000 feet and at about 250 knots.  The second aircraft was small twin engine which flew a lot lower at about 5,000 feet and at about 140 knots.

Neither aircraft had apparently lodged a flight plan as the destination wasn't noted on Flight Tracker and they were both from the same charter company and they were flying into a uncontrolled regional airport late at night.  Conspiracy, paranoia, suggestions anyone?

After a few days of declining numbers the numbers of new infections for the last 24 hours are back up again but only slightly at 240, up from 216 for the previous day.  Thirteen new deaths reported for the 24 hours, 1 male in his 70's, 6 females in their 80's and 5 females and 1 male in their 90's.  There are 665 Victorians in hospital with 43 of those in ICU and 28 on ventilators.  

The number of tests in the last 24 hours in back up over the twenty thousand mark and there are 3,784 mystery cases, down 33 on the previous day.

I've got a 2.00pm zoom meeting today with the Shrine people and I have to do a little presentation on one of my favourite items in the Galleries.   

Now for the international figures.  In some sort of anomaly the total number UK deaths have declined by 5,300.  I think that they have reclassified some deaths of people who died with the virus but not caused by the virus.  

Worldwide the number of new infections went up by 1,773,451 compared to a weekly increase the week before of 1,821,353.  The number of deaths for the week was 38,416 down from 41,191 the week before.  These figures although still large appear to be heading in the right direction.  However, given the irregularities in the world figures previously it would be nice to see a pattern of a decline over a few weeks.

The USA, Brazil and India account for 1,070,919 of the new infections or 60%.  Add in Mexico and Russia and the percentage goes up to 64%.

Belgium, Spain, Italy and France all experienced spikes in the number of deaths for the last week.  Not large numbers compared to the USA etc but large enough in percentage terms to stand out.

This table looks perfect in the edit screen and preview screen lets hope it doesn't look like a dog's dinner in the published screen.  If it does don't blame me.

Remember: to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no and be kind.
