Blog Day 163 - Thursday 03 September 2020

As you know I like to start the blog with some good news.  Yesterday at about 11.30am in the morning I ordered a coat from Snowgum, a waterproof 3/4 length coat which was less than half price and two reusable face masks.  The parcel turned up with a thump on my doorstep at 10.05am this morning, less than 24 hours after ordering.  During the period between ordering and delivering I must have received 8 or 9 emails and messages from Snowgum and Aus Post updating me on the progress of my parcel.  Marvellous service I reckon and the coat fits.

 This is getting a little bit scary, Victoria has recorded an increase in the number of new infection for the third day in a row.  We recorded 113 new infections in last 24 hours up from 90 & 70 for the previous two days.  Deaths are up again but that is more of a reflection on the progress of the virus through the nursing home rather than an increase in the general population.  Victoria reported 15 deaths in the last 24 hours, this is an increase on the five and six deaths reported in the last two days.  Of the 15 deaths 14 were in the aged care system, we also don't know how many of these deaths were historical and not previously reported.  There are 361 Victorians in hospital, 20 in ICU and 15 on ventilators.

Worldwide there were 271,000 new infections and 5,500 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.  Nothing special in these figures, just running along within the daily range.

In the figures for the last week there is a new leader in the number of new infections and the number of deaths.  India reported 541,000 new infections and 6,900 deaths for the week, exceeding both the USA and Brazil who reported 290,000 and 279,000 new infections respectively and both reported a tad over 6,000 deaths for the week.

The USA has now reported a decline in the number of new infections for last three weeks and a significant decline in the number of deaths in the last week.  Brazil seems to have stopped any significant increase in the number of new infections and deaths but there is no significant decrease in either.

There appears to be some problems reoccurring in Europe.  Spain reported 53,000 new infections for the week, up from 39,000 the previous week with 223 deaths compared to 174.  France reported 39,000 new infections for the week an increase on the 29,000 reported the previous week. France reported 142 deaths for the week an increase on the 76 deaths reported the previous week.  Although minor compared to India etc Spain and France would not want to see these numbers continue to increase.

Above: Corona Virus International Stats as at 03/09/2020

And now the State of Disaster remembers;

Remember: please don't go to the beach, to stay indoors between 8.00pm and 5.00am, stay safe & stay strong, respect the 5km limits, don't try & get a haircut, drink your coffee at home, don't dither at the supermarket checkout, don't get Jim's Mowing in to cut your grass, get some virus approved exercise, shop at Harvey Norman for good service, be honest, if in doubt wear a mask and a face shield, remember the fallen, get plenty of sleep, laugh at my jokes, have a virtual beer with a Vietnam vet, if you have to ask - the answer is no, remain vigilant, act responsibly, apologise if you are wrong, use Zoom to keep in touch, put your bins out before curfew, don't smoke around your baby, keep your eye on the ball and be kind.

  1. There might be a typo in the reports, however according to https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/victorian-coronavirus-covid-19-data - there were over 80k tests for the 113 new cases - so it could be a few from other days? Not sure how that all works - and it seems all those extra deaths from the other day were from aged care - so obviously some lag in reporting. I don't think there's a lot of care in aged care... Not even the minister for aged care seems to care.

    But back to my point, the %of positive tests today was 0.14 - so back to the old levels. At the peak we we're seeing 3-3.5% of tests coming back positive. So I don't tend to look at the raw number so much as long as %positive is low and the trend is down. 7day average is still falling.

    1. Apparently the 80,000 plus tests the other day was as a result of miscounting or missed counting from previous periods. I listened to the premier when he was explaining this and like the missing and late death reports he made no sense at all.

    1. I don't think that my clothes cupboard (also known as a wardrobe) would be as interesting as my pantry.
