Blog Day 176 - 17 September 2020

An elephant walks into a bar and asks the barkeeper if he can use the phone, the barkeeper says "Ok but remember no trunk calls".

If you get caught trying to break through the "ring of steel" around Melbourne you will incur a fine of nearly $5,000, if there are two adults in the car say husband and wife, they will both incur a $5,000 fine (and a criminal conviction).  That would knock the household budget around!

Maybe we could call it an iron curtain, "from Sorrento to Werribee an iron curtain has descended across the metropolitan area.  Behind that line lie all the capitals of the states of Australia and the Western and Eastern world". (With apologies to Winnie).

But, if you really want to break out wait until it is raining or foggy.  For "safety reasons" the police are not allowed to man the roadblocks when it is raining or foggy.  Lucky they kept that quiet.

Straight into the daily figures.  Victoria has reported 28 new infections which is our lowest figure since 24/6.  We have reported 8 further deaths taking our total to 745 out of a national total of 832.  We have 107 Victorians in hospital due to the virus and 11 of those are in intensive care.

As you can see from the figures below the 14 day rolling average is continuing to decline and has been below the magic 50 figure for a couple of days now.

The rolling 14 day average is as below:

16/09: Metro 49.6, Regional ?, State ?
17/09: Metro 44.4, Regional 2.9, State 47.3

Worldwide, the number of infections cracked the 30 million mark with an increase of 298,000 in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths is just under 945,000 with an increase of 5,500 in the last 24 hours.

The big four (USA, Brazil, Mexico and India), as I call them, are still reporting the lion's share of the weekly new infections and deaths.  These four countries reported 59% of the total worldwide new infections for the week and with the exception of Mexico they reported increased new infections over the previous week.  These countries have reported 57% of the total worldwide infections, 52% of the total worldwide deaths and 61% of the new deaths for the week.

India reported 653,000 new infections for the week compared to 613,000 the previous week.  For comparison the USA reported 279,000 (259,000) new infections for the week, Brazil 222,000 (198,000) and Mexico 34,000 (37,000). Previous week in brackets.

India reported 8,100 deaths for the week compared to 7,605 the previous week. The USA reported 6,000 (5,200) deaths for the week, Brazil 5,500 (4,800) and Mexico 3,000 (3,200).  Last weeks figures in brackets.

The UK, Spain and France all reported increased numbers of infections for the week, weekly figures as follows with last week's figures in brackets; UK 23,000 (16,543); Spain 70,981 (63,825); France 60,787 (51,077).

UK, Spain and France all recorded an increase in the number of deaths for last week.  Italy recorded a decrease in the number of new infections and new deaths from the previous week.  UK, Spain, France and Italy have reported 6% of the total worldwide infections however they have incurred 15% of the total deaths.  Last week these four countries incurred 8% of the increase in infections and 3% of the deaths for the week.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 17/09/2020

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2 week extension remembers.

Remember: to follow the legal instructions of a police officer, not to get carried away with false optimism (again), if you are going to run a road block do it when it is raining.
