Blog Day 178 - 19 September 2020

A leopard walks into a bar looking very smug and pleased with herself, the barman said "why are you looking so smug and pleased with yourself"? and the leopard said "I've changed my spots".

There has been some concern about a cluster of 90 or so recent new infections in the City of Casey.  Of these new infections  at least 34 have been as a result of a family group ignoring the the lockdown restrictions and visiting various households and moving outside the 5 km limit.  Over the last couple of days this family group has been identified as part of the Afghan community in Casey.

Apparently you are not able to report matters of truth any more as this morning the CHO has issued a personal grovelling public apology to the Afghan community for suggesting that some members of that community were responsible for the spreading of the virus due to ignoring and disobeying the lockdown rules and regulations.

Nobody is saying it didn't happen, just that you can't report it.

In the past some welfare groups and ethnic groups have been critical of the government in that the messages have not been made available to the various ethnic groups in their own language or via their own ethnic community leaders.

My question is this, if you are not allowed to acknowledge that there maybe issues within an ethnic community how do you deal with those issues within the ethnic community.  Surely acknowledging the problem is the first step in resolving it.

As they say "the first casualty of war is truth".

Notwithstanding the issues in the City of Casey, the daily figures for Victoria for the last 24 hours are very promising.  The state reported 21 new infection in the last 24 hours compared to 45 the day before.  We reported 7 further deaths, up from 5 the day before, bringing the total number of deaths in Victoria to 757.  There are currently 89 Victorians in hospital with the virus, 8 in ICU and 5 on ventilators.

The rolling 14 day average is as below is still heading in the right direction;

18/09: Metro 42.7
19/09: Metro 39.3, Regional 1.9, Total 41.2

The worldwide figures are of no comfort at all.  The number of new infections for the last 24 hours at 352,000 is the highest since at least the 7th of July when I started recording these numbers.  The day before was 315,000 which is also extremely high.  Lets hope that these numbers aren't reflected in the number of deaths in the future.

Worldwide number of deaths was just under 6,000 for the last 24 hours and 5,700 for the previous day.  Although not the highest figures we have seen they are still very high.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2 week extension remembers.

Remember: to follow the legal instructions of a police officer, not to get carried away with false optimism (again), if you are going to run a road block do it when it is raining, tell the truth.
