Blog Day 197 - 08 October 2020

A deer was sitting at a bar with no eyes, what was it called - no idea.

It is interesting that when you walk up and down the same street every day for 6 months how you notice the subtle changes in the neighbourhood.  I reckon Centre Rd between East Boundary Rd and Tucker Rd is being dug up for the 100th time since this pandemic started (and I know you have told me a 100 million times not to exaggerate).  Not only do they dig up the road but also the footpath and the various side streets.  The dig up the road and footpath then work on something, fill in the holes and then seal it and then a couple of days later they dig it up again.  A new block of flats has had its driveway dug up at least 3 or 4 times in the last month.

I am thinking that the work is required to upgrade the various utilities required cater for the higher density living in the area caused by all the new apartment building and multi occupancy dwellings.  I hope that it is the developers paying for all the work and not us poor struggling ratepayers and tax payers.

Further to my comments yesterday about the Emergency Management Commissioner, Andrew Crisp, he was also the person who well after the event gave the premier his get out of gaol free card in respect to the use of the ADF in the hotel quarantine program.

First up the Victorian figures for the last 24 hours.  Victoria reported 11 new infections and no deaths in the last 24 hours.  The 11 new infections is an increase on the 6 reported the previous day.  There are 17 Victorians in hospital due to the virus and one in ICU.  The one patient in ICU is the manager of the butcher shop in Chadstone who apparently after appearing to be OK had a relapse and had to be admitted to hospital.

Rolling 14 day figures;

7/10: Metro 9.9, Regional .3, Total 10.2 (14 day mystery cases 12)
8/10: Metro 9.7, Regional .4, Total 10.1 (14 day mystery cases 14)

Worldwide figures for the week.  Worldwide 2,233,000 new infections were reported for the current week in increase from 2,063,000 the week before and 41,800 deaths were reported an increase on 37,000 the week before.  The death figure is significantly more than the previous few weeks and the highest figure since 13/08.

In Europe the new infections for the last week have been dominated by the UK and Spain.  The UK reported 91,000 new infections for the week which was up from 43,000 the week before and 32,000 the week before that.  Spain reported 103,000 new infection for the week an increase from 76,000 the week before.  France reported 90,000 new infections for the week which was an increase from the 82,000 reported the week before.  Italy appears to have things under control with 19,000 new infections but even this is an increase on the 12,000 reported the week before.

Looking at these figures you would say that France is doing ok until you realise on 13/8 they reported only 13,000 new infections for the week.  I understand that UK, Spain and France are imposing new restrictions.  The UK is taking the huge step of closing the pubs at 10.00pm.

The death figures for the week are as follows (last week's figures in brackets) UK 372 (281); Spain 771 (757); Italy 167 (316); France 489 (497).  Although high, apart from the UK these figures are reasonably stable, but remember a few weeks ago these countries were reporting weekly death figures of less than 100.

Now onto the biggies, USA, Brazil, Mexico and India.  Between them these countries accounted for 49% of the new infections for the week and 51% of then new deaths.

The following are the new infections for this week (last week's figures in brackets) USA 329,000 (308,000); Brazil 189,000 (186,000); Mexico 56,000 (33,000); India 523,000 (580,083).

Likewise the death figures for these countries for the last week USA 5,022 (5,145); Brazil 4,342 (4,897); Mexico 5,185 (2,815); India 6,846 (7,535).

With the exception of Mexico these countries showed only minor increases or decreases in the number of new infections and deaths.  The figures for USA, Brazil and India while not getting dramatically worse certainly do not represent any level of control over the virus.

After a few weeks of appearing to have things under control Mexico has experienced a blow out in both numbers of new infections and deaths with both the highest weekly figures since at least 13/8.

Aren't we lucky that we live on a small island continent near the end of the world.  Nearly as lucky as our New Zealand cousins who live on a couple of small islands at the end of the world.  These are the occasions when a bit of national isolation is a good thing.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 08/10/2020

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2nd step restrictions remembers.

Remember: if you are doing anything wrong don't get caught, it could cost you $5,000!; you gotta wear a face mask no more face shields - thems the rules; somebody somewhere is testing your poo!; do not under any circumstances annoy a Cassowary; if you need a boost to your morale watch Zulu; keep to your 5km zone and if that doesn't include a beach don't go to the beach; try not to commit perjury (allegedly).

Comments

  1. Don’t you get the $1.36 a day (for a year) in the budget for old people?
