Blog Day 202 - 13 October 2020

A bear walked into a bar and asked for a......................beer, and the barman said 'why the big pause'?

Can politics in this country get any better.  A candidate in my ward in my local council election is now accused of being "a Chinese agent of influence".  The candidate is president of the Chinese Community Council of Australia's Victorian (CCCAV) branch which some claim is associated with the United Front Work Department which is claimed to be associated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).  The candidate has withdrawn from the council election although she is still directing votes to her running mates, good luck to them.

The newspaper article reporting this also stated that this candidate is a current member of the ALP and formerly advisor to a state Labor MP.  I don't think that any of this was mentioned in her publicity blurbs.

Who would have thought that sleepy old Bentleigh East would be a hot bed of communist activity (allegedly).  Although the Petrovs did live in the area after their defection from the USSR during the height of the cold war.

And still politics is the gift that keeps on giving.  How about the NSW premier, Gladys Berejiklian, giving evidence to the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) that she was in a "close personal relationship", until recently, with a disgraced MP accused of corruption and being investigated by the ICAC.  Apparently she had been in a relationship with the MP, Daryl Maguire for five years and only recently ended the relationship.  Phone taps have revealed that she was aware that Maguire was receiving commissions for brokering property deals as far back as 2014.  Maguire is to start being examined today, should be interesting.

Will Gladys do an Andrews and dig in or will she resign?

And while we are talking fun and games in state politics.  You may or may not know that Queensland it about to head to the polls in a state election.  Yesterday, the state premier, Annastacia Palaszcuk had the temerity to suggest who might or might not be in her cabinet after the election.  She was very promptly put in her place by an unelected union official and factional labor left heavyweight who made it clear that the makeup of her cabinet was not her decision.

And poor old ScoMo got paint and tomatoes thrown at him at a university yesterday.

Now for some good news, a White House doctor has told us that President Donald Trump has tested negative to the virus and is not infectious to others.

As another Chinese agent of influence once said "we live in interesting times".

Now onto today's figures.  Victoria reported 12 new infections for the last 24 hours which is down on 15 the day before.  The premier is now accepting that we won't make the trigger points for the next step by 19/10 and has suggested that there maybe a recalibration wherein 10 becomes the new 5 and 5 becomes the new zero.  By way of comparison NSW reported 13 new infections in the last 24 hours, 7 of those were from local sources and 6 from overseas travellers.

We reported one more death in the last 24 hours bringing the state total to 811 and the national total to 899.  Victoria has 22 people in hospital due to the virus and none in ICU.

We are really experiencing difficulty in clearing up this troublesome tail, with the rolling 14 day average back up into double figures, just.  Whilst these figure hold up there will be doubt in the government of just how much the restrictions can be relaxed.

Rolling 14 day average;

12/10: Metro 9.9, Regional .4, Total 10.3
13/10: Metro 10.0, Regional .4, Total 10.4

Worldwide, 293,000 new infections and 3,900 new deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 2nd step restrictions remembers.

Remember: if you are doing anything wrong don't get caught, it could cost you $5,000!; you gotta wear a face mask no more face shields - thems the rules; somebody somewhere is testing your poo!; do not under any circumstances annoy a Cassowary; if you need a boost to your morale watch Zulu; keep to your 5km zone and if that doesn't include a beach don't go to the beach; try not to commit perjury (allegedly); to vote if you don't want a fine, show true grit, tell your children not to get involved in politics.
