Blog Day 204 - Friday 16 October 2020
Another virus free Friday has rolled around.
Preliminary finals with the footy this weekend. Richmond and Port Adelaide are playing in Adelaide this evening and Brisbane Lions and Geelong playing in Brissie tomorrow night. The winners of these two games go into the grand final to be played in Brisbane next Saturday evening. The AFL has taken the opportunity to play this grand final as an evening game something that they didn't dare do in Melbourne, it will be interesting to see if this sets a precedent for future grand finals when they return to Melbourne.
Given Richmond's involvement in the preliminary final tonight and that some of the trivia players may be distracted by that I doubt that there will be zoom trivia tonight.
Another feature event of the Melbourne sporting calendar will be run tomorrow being the Caulfield Cup. I understand that this will be run with no public at the track. Of course the running of the Caulfield Cup means that the Melbourne Cup is looming on the horizon. It hasn't been determined as yet whether a limited number of people will be allowed to attend or whether it will be raced past empty grandstands.
One of the few big Melbourne events I haven't been to over the years is a Melbourne cup. I have been to some outstanding cup eve and cup day functions. When I say functions I probably mean parties and barbecues. Then for about 6 years whilst I was attending uni as a very mature age student the Melbourne cup was held during the middle of exams. For that period I usually spent cup day cramming for an economics or tax law exam that was scheduled for the following day.
I have attended a few Derby and Oaks days. When I worked at Pattisons we usually had a couple of spaces in one of the car parks for marketing and entertaining during the cup carnival. Every now and again we would even see a horse flash past. These were usually very big days and often finished up at a chinese restaurant in the city, like we needed that.
The other big cup days was when I was sharing a house in Caulfield with me old mate Flashy and other assorted reprobates and we held our legendary cup day barbecues. The less said about them probably the better, not that I could remember much about them anyway. One thing I do remember is that it bucketed down one cup day and we had about 50 people standing under the carport. It wasn't much use standing inside as the roof leaked. The main thing that I can remember is having to get up and go to work the next day.
That will do for today, it is a beautiful spring day outside and nearly time to go for a walk. Apparently we are due for catastrophic rain storms over the weekend so I had better make the most of the nice day.
Update on figures and things tomorrow.
Ah Major, I also recall those days in Farnham Ave, which is a major thing in itself. Do you remember us trying to kill the rat in the wall cavity with the .22 and using .22 shorts so as not to kill anyone sleeping in the next room? Or how about the famous tequila party?
ReplyDeleteI thought that it was a possum in the wall cavity but yes I remember it well. Ah, yes the famous tequila party........
