Blog Day 209 - Thursday 22 October 2020

 Only eight scruffy blokes waiting at the barber shop this morning.

Now here is a funny thing, the weather bureau is forecasting a 30% chance of storms and possibly thunderstorms for Brisbane on Saturday at the same time the grand final is being played.  The AFL rules are that if there is a lightning strike within 10km of the venue play has to stop for 30 minutes from the strike or from the last strike of the storm.  How ironic that after the way that the AFL has managed its way through probably the most difficult season in its history that the grand final could be stopped or even abandoned due to a thunderstorm.

I received a cheque for $12 today from the RACV being a partial refund of my roadside assistance premium for the months of April, May and June due to limited use of motor vehicles in that period of time.  Hmmmm, wonder what I will spend it on.

In the local figures, Victoria reported 5 new infections in the last 24 hours an increase from 3 the day before.  There are concerns around a cluster developing in the northern suburbs involving 16 active cases around six households.  The East Preston Islamic College has closed for cleaning and staff and pupils gone into quarantine as a result of a student from one of the infected households attending school prior to completing his quarantine period and subsequently testing positive to the virus.

Victoria has now gone 4 days without any further deaths and the state death toll due to the virus remains at 817 and the national figure is 905.  There are currently 9 Victorians in hospital due to the virus and none in ICU.

Rolling 14 Day Average;

21/10: Metro 6.2, Regional .4, Total 6.6
22/10: Metro 6.1, Regional .3, Total 6.4

Worldwide, in the last 24 hours there were 421,428 new infections and 6,106 new deaths.  The total number of deaths due to the pandemic is now 1,135,697.

The worldwide figures are as follows with last week's figures in brackets after the current figures.  The USA reported 438,000 (370,000) new infections for the week which is a significant increase on the week before and 5,600 (5,000) deaths for the week.  Brazil reported 159,000 (139,000) new infections and 3,700 (3,500) deaths, Mexico reported 35,000 (31,000) new infections and 2,500 (2,100) deaths for the week.  Of the 'big four' only India showed any decline in the number of new infections and number of deaths with 400,000 (472,000) and 5,300 (5,700) respectively.

In Europe the UK, Spain, Italy and France all reported large increases in the number of new infections for the week and they all also reported increases in the number of deaths.

The UK reported 135,000 (110,000) new infections and 1,000 (640) deaths for the week; Spain reported 109,000 (65,000) new infections and 950 (850) deaths; Italy reported 77,000 (39,000) new infections and 540 (230) new deaths for the week and France reported 178,000 new infections and 1,000 (590) new deaths.  I emphasise that these figures are for the week only.  Apart from Spain the number of deaths in the four European countries have nearly doubled in the week and given the significant increases in infections in the these countries the death rate will most likely continue to increase.

The USA, Brazil, Mexico and India account for 40% (43%) of the worldwide new infections and UK, Spain, France and Italy account for 18% (15%) of the worldwide new infections, between them these countries account for 58% (58%) of the worldwide new infections.

The percentages for the increase in deaths for the week are similar to the above.  The USA, Brazil, Mexico and India account for 43% (45%) of the new deaths for the week and the UK, Spain, Italy and France account for 9% (6%) of the new deaths. These 8 countries account for 52% (51%) of the worldwide new deaths.

Corona Virus International Stats as at 22/10/2020

And now the stage 4 lockdown 3rd step restrictions remembers;

Remember: we still can't walk into a bar and get a beer; no matter how hard we try sometimes the figures just don't add up; if you are subpoenaed to produce documents to produce all of them!.

  1. Just noticed your ISO hair picture - not good - go stand in line at the barbers - now.

    1. A public holiday and there are still people lined up outside the barber shop, you may have to give me the number for Frankie's grooming service.

  2. I think the cases in Europe are actually less than last time - we're just seeing higher official numbers due to better and more widespread testing.
    There's a really good channel on Youtube that I watch - old medical guy presenting a very balanced report on what's happening. Have you seen this:

    1. You might be right as to the number of infections but testing doesn't affect the death numbers and they are on the increase. I will have a look at the youtube clip.

  3. I am finding it harder and harder to read media articles on anything these days. It appears media reporting should be replaced with speculation reporting or I think I will just make something up. The ISO pictures were not pretty, please don't frighten the children anymore. Our CHO is about the only one telling the truth and I suspect he was sent to meetings where his priority was about health not about who were guarding people. But maybe he will fall on the Dan sword as well. The new strain in Qld from the Russian/Ukrainian fisherman is a worry. If they do a Dan and let that out we are in a third wave situation in Vic. House prices are booming, Tas is going through the roof. I can hear the call now, go bush young man.

    1. You are right about the media, you are better off sticking to reliable and informative sources like my blog. I can't see Qld being stupid enough to do a Dan although they are of the same political persuasion so anything is possible.
