Blog Day 218 - Saturday 31 October 2020 - Derby Day

Today is the first day of the Flemington VRC spring carnival and is traditionally "black and white day".  However, this year will be a little different as all of the spring carnival meetings at Flemington with be crowdless.  The only attendees at the track will be the staff required to run the races and the jockeys & trainers and of course the horses on the course.

This morning I decided that I would like to have a bet on the Melbourne cup and decided to reactivate my TAB betting account.  After having my logon rejected as 'account closed' I checked the expiry date on my TAB card and it expired in September 2013, as you can see I don't really have a gambling problem. A pop up screen suggested I ring the customer assistance number and after a couple of false starts I spoke to a very polite young man who opened a new account for me and sent me an email with a link to activate the on line betting account.  So I have activated the on line account and transferred some funds and I am ready to make my fortune on Tuesday.

Today is also Halloween, I am not sure if the kiddies are allowed to go door knocking this year although I doubt that any will come to my place, not after last year anyway.  It took me a while to get the egg stains of the front door but it was worth it. (I thought that it was supposed to be kiddies throwing the eggs, not the parents).

Today's virus figures are looking good, Victoria reported only one new case in the last 24 hours and four the day prior.  No new deaths reported in Victoria or nationally.  Currently Victoria has 71 active cases and NSW is coming second with 54.  It is always good to beat NSW at something but I am not sure about this one.  We are down to two Victorians in hospital out of 16 nationally.

There appears to be no unknown (community transmissions) in Victoria or nationally, which has to be good news.

The 14 Day rolling average:

30/10: Metro 2.6, Regional .0, Total 2.6
31/10: Metro 2.4, Regional .0, Total 2.4

Worldwide the figures are still causing a lot of concern, in the last 24 hours there were 552,000 new infections and 607,000 the day before.  In the last 24 hours there were 7,300 new deaths and in the previous day 7,900 new deaths.  Apart from some previous aberrations in reporting these are pretty much the highest consecutive death figures reported world wide during the pandemic and will remain high while the infection rates continue to remain high.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 3rd step restrictions remembers;

Remember: we still can't walk into a bar and get a beer; no matter how hard we try sometimes the figures just don't add up; if you are subpoenaed to produce documents to produce all of them!; don't take your eyes off the ball; keep your visitor log book; don't hang around smoking outside a cafe; don't travel to Peru; gamble responsibly.
