Blog Day 135 - Tuesday 17 November 2020

At our Shrine volunteer zoom meeting this morning it was confirmed that the Shrine will be reopening on 23 November with strict controls on numbers of people who can enter and where they can go.  They are expecting that volunteers will be returning around the middle of January next year, all things being equal.

They also confirmed that the Shrine volunteer christmas lunch will be held on 9 December and will be a picnic lunch held in the grounds of the Shrine reserve, with all volunteers and all Shrine staff invited and even with a complete lack of alcohol it should be good fun and something to look forward to.

For today's movie discussion we had previously watched a movie called 'Fanny's Journey' or as I like to say 'Le Voyage De Fanny'.  It is the story of a group of nine French Jewish children escaping from German occupied France to neutral Switzerland in the 2ndWW.  The children were aged from 7 or so to Fanny who was 13.  As the oldest she was put in charge of the group.  At the end of the movie we discovered that it was based on a true story and that Fanny is still alive and living in Israel, at least she was when the movie was made in 2016. Even though the movie was in French with English subtitles I really enjoyed it. If you are interested it is still available on SBS and it goes for about an hour and half and I recommend it.

Further good news with a second vaccine reporting a 94.5 effectiveness in testing.  It is suggested that both the Pfilzer and Moderna vaccines will be available around March next year albeit in limited numbers.  There will need to be a system of prioritising who gets vaccinated first, I am suggesting males over 67 should be the first in the queue.

The outbreak of the virus is continuing in South Australia with a further 3 infections in the last 24 hours bringing the cluster to 20.

Victoria has recorded its 18th day of zero new infections and zero deaths, which continues to be great news.  There were 17,400 new test results in Victoria in the last 24 hours for the zero result.  Victoria currently has 3 active cases of which 2 are in hospital, NSW has 20 active cases and SA has 34 active cases, Australia wide there are 86 active virus cases.  No further deaths have been recorded Australia wide.

The rolling 14 day average for Victoria is 0 for metropolitan Melbourne and likewise for regional Victoria.

However, unfortunately the worldwide figures are beginning their traditional post weekend upward trend with 506,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and nearly 7,500 deaths reported in the same period.

And now the Towards Covid Normal remembers;

Remember: Keep wearing your mask!; remember to remember Remembrance Day; the price of corona virus liberty is eternal vigilance; enjoy the new found freedoms but not too much, just yet; don't get your tennis racquet out just yet; don't travel to SA.

  1. Testing in Vic is also reasonably good so you'd have to think that the virus must be circulating in really low numbers without any really bad cases. This is the time they really need to be investing in all the processes an protocols in preparation for the next outbreak.

    1. You are right Andrew, particularly if we intend the to host international cricket and tennis in Melbourne in the next month or so.
