Blog Day 219 - Sunday 01 November 2020

Well, here we are, the start of another month and although there has been the lifting of some virus related restrictions the virus still dominates our daily life.  People are still working from home and will be doing so for the foreseeable future, there are limits on the number of people who can gather in restaurants and other public places; cinemas, theatres, galleries and museums (including the Shrine) still aren't open; various state borders are opening but there are still restriction on interstate travel; international travel is severely limited and almost impossible; there are still restrictions on visits the households; we still have to wear masks and of course there are limits on travel both within the Melbourne metropolitan area and within the state.

I am sure that like me a lot of people wait to see what the daily figures and worry about the slightest increase in new infections or infections from unknown sources and our rolling 14 day average.

I have noticed on my walk that the Boundary Hotel, across the road from me, has still not reopened apart from it's drive through bottle shop.  Given the layout of the place under the current restrictions it is probably not economical or practical to reopen until they can have a greater number of patrons.

I see that large parts of Europe have gone back into serious lockdown.  England has gone back into severe lockdown for a further four weeks and the rest of the UK is following suite.  The UK has become the 9th country to crack the 1,000,000 infections mark with 1,011,660 to date.

Now for the good news.  Victoria recorded zero new virus infections in the last 24 hours and yesterday's new case has been reclassified as a remnant case has been removed from our figures therefore we have gone 2 days without a new infection.  Australia wide we recorded 6 new infections, NSW 4; Qld 1; WA 1; all returned travellers in quarantine.  Victoria currently has 61 active cases and NSW 52.  There were no community transmissions Australia wide in the last 24 hours.  The first time that this has happened in 5 months.

Australia wide there has been 25,336 people recorded as recovered from the virus of this number Victoria has recorded 19,466 and NSW the next largest number at 3,148.

The 14 day rolling average for Victoria is as follows;

31/10: Metro 2.4, Regional .0, Total 2.4
01/11: Metro 2.2, Regional .0, Total 2.2

That's the good news, now for the bad news.  Worldwide new infections for the last 24 hours has been reported as 475,000, down from 551,000 the previous day with new deaths reported at 6,500, down from 7,300 the previous day.  However, even though these number are a little lower than previous days remember the weekend figures are notoriously inaccurate and low.

How grateful are we that "our land is girt by sea". Bet you didn't think I would get to use the word girt in the blog, but there you go.

And now the stage 4 lockdown 3rd step restrictions remembers;

Remember: we still can't walk into a bar and get a beer; no matter how hard we try sometimes the figures just don't add up; if you are subpoenaed to produce documents to produce all of them!; don't take your eyes off the ball; keep your visitor log book; don't hang around smoking outside a cafe; don't travel to Peru; gamble responsibly; continue to wear your mask responsibly.
