Blog Day 175     - Sunday 27 December 2020

Any time I take a break from the blog the poo seems to hit the spinning air circulation device.  Community infections and lockdowns in NSW,  border closures across the country, attempted escapes from hotel quarantine in Victoria, the virus still rampant overseas and the release of the hotel quarantine commission report, which told us nothing anyway.

I trust that you have all had an enjoyable and safe christmas and now to look forward to a new year that doesn't contain the surprises that this old year has.

There is test cricket being played at the MCG to a crowd limited to 30,000. The Sydney - Hobart yacht race was cancelled due to the virus conditions in NSW, so things aren't quite back to normal in the sporting world.  The Australian Open is scheduled to start in Melbourne on 8 February.

Now to some figures, in the last 10 days there were 239 new infections recorded Australia wide, I think that this figure includes overseas travellers in hotel quarantine in all states except NSW.  NSW does not include returned travellers in hotel quarantine in their state figures.

In the last 23 hours Victoria recorded one returned traveller as infected, NSW recorded 11 new infections of which 7 were community transmissions and 4 overseas travellers in quarantine.  As at today Victoria has 10 active cases, 9 of which are returned overseas travellers; NSW has 134 active cases excluding returned overseas travellers of which they have 82; Qld has 10 active cases and WA 12, all returned travellers.  Australia wide there are 182 active cases including 47 returned overseas travellers but not including returned overseas travellers in NSW.

These results are the outcome of 5,900 test results received in Victoria in the last 24 hours, nearly 24,000 tests in NSW and 1,600 in Qld.

NSW still has 6 or 7 mystery cases, (source unknown) and they still haven't located to "patient zero" in the Northern Beaches.

Worldwide things have got no better during my little sabbatical.  In the last 10 days there were over 6 million new infections reported worldwide for an average of 623,000 per day taking the total number of infections worldwide to 80,710,866 for the pandemic.

In the same period a further 110,000 people died worldwide due to the pandemic for an average of 11,000 per day, bringing the total number of deaths worldwide due to the pandemic to 1,764,374.

Some countries have started to roll out the vaccines, however obviously to soon to have any effect on the figures just yet.  Many European countries have tightened their lockdowns including Britain and Germany to try and get control of things.
