Blog Day 178 - Wednesday 30 December 2020

Last day of the year tomorrow and it has been a bit of a year.  I will be out for most of the day tomorrow so will catch up with blog stuff on Friday.

How is this for a paradox, Sydney is still putting on it's fireworks a midnight NYE but is closing off the city so that no one can watch them and Melbourne is not having fireworks but the city will be open but there will be no fireworks to look at.  Also the Melbourne city council is encouraging people to come into the city for the evening and the state government is encouraging people to stay home.  So work that one out.

It looks like Sydney has rather greedily clutched the third cricket test back, although a new virus cluster has been detected in Croydon which at the time of going to press had an unknown source.

Australia wide there were 31 new cases detected in the last 24 hours of which 25 were in NSW.  Of the NSW cases 7 were from overseas travellers, however 18 were locally acquired, of which 9 cases were part of the Avalon cluster (northern beaches), 6 were in a new cluster based in Croydon with an unknown source and 3 cases are still be investigated.  All other infections reported in the other states including one in Victoria were all returned overseas travellers.

NSW reported results from 17,300 tests in the last 24 hours, Victoria 8,700 tests, Qld 4,918 tests, WA 2,800 and SA 4,900.

NSW now has 160 active cases (excluding returned overseas travellers, Victoria has 8 active cases - all returned overseas travellers and currently there are 204 active cases Australia wide.

Victoria has recorded its 61st day with no community transmissions.

So far the increase in numbers in NSW hasn't resulted in an increase in hospitalisations or deaths, but as we have seen deaths caused by the virus can occur many months after infection.

Unfortunately the world wide figures have bounced back up with 670,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours.  There were 15,442 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, this is the highest daily death figure that I have seen since I have been keeping figures.

 Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger".
