Blog Day 287 - Friday 08 January 2021
I thought that my blog day numbers seemed a bit light on so on investigation I discovered that when I carried forward blog day 220 (02/11/2020) to 03/11 I carried it forward as 120 and have continued to do so ever since. This has now been corrected and the correct blog day number is 287.
Quick trip down to Southland this morning to buy a 1st birthday present for a birthday party I am going to tomorrow. Reasonably busy but most people wearing masks and lots of hand sanitiser stations around.
Brisbane is going into lockdown at 6.00pm this afternoon for three days. They have one infection but it is the more virulent UK version of the virus. Caught by a cleaner in the hotel quarantine system who apparently moved around the community for three days prior to showing symptoms. Brisbanites will also be limited in the number of visitors they can have in their home and will have to wear masks when away from home.
I hope they don't find three days of these restrictions too onerous!
Good luck to those Victorians who fled from NSW to Brisbane in attempt to avoid quarantine on their return to Victoria.
Day two of the 3rd test between Australia and India being played at the SCG with Australia batting first and at lunch Australia are 5 for 249. Three wickets fell in the morning session. The 4th test is due to be played at the Gabba in Brisbane starting on 15 January. The Indian team were already making noises about not wanting to be in strict quarantine in Brisbane for the test. I wonder what effect this most recent infection and lockdown will have on the Brissie test.
Victoria reported one new infection in the last 24 hours and that was from a returned overseas traveller, we have now had two days of zero local infections with approximately the results of 33,000 tests received in the last 24 hours. NSW had four new local infections with three from known clusters and one mystery case. Australia wide there were 21 new infections, 17 of which were from returned overseas travellers.
There are currently 304 active cases in nationally with the majority of these, 197 being in NSW, 39 in Victoria and 23 in Queensland.
There are currently 40 people in hospital Australia wide due to the virus, this figure is gradually creeping up from 26 a few days ago. None of these are in hospital in Victoria and none are in intensive care. Lets hope that the increase in hospitalisations doesn't lead to any further deaths.
Talking about deaths the rest of the world is out of control with 17,000 deaths reported in the last 24 hours taking the worldwide total deaths due to the pandemic to a tad over 1.9 million. Infections increase by 877,000 in the last 24 hours which would be one of the highest figures recorded to date.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;
Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid..
