Blog Day 289 - Sunday 10 January 2021

I know that you all eagerly await my daily update on the cricket, so here goes.  At lunch on the 4th day of the 3rd test between Australia and India at the SCG, in it's second innings Australia is 4 for 182, giving them Australia a second innings lead of 276 runs over India.  I am looking forward to an exciting afternoon's play. I have nearly finished today's chores so I can give the cricket my undivided attention this arvo.

I went to a one year old birthday party yesterday at a park in Werribee.  It was lots of fun even though there were some tears, tantrums and filled nappies, and that was only amongst the over 60's.

Victoria has experienced 4 days of no new local infections of the virus.  There were 6 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, all returned overseas travellers.  NSW has reported 6 new cases, 3 locally acquired from known clusters and 3 returned overseas travellers.  Queensland reported no new cases in the last 24 hours.  In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of over 23,000 tests, NSW nearly 24,000 and Qld 19,000.  The Vic and NSW testing figures are down a bit but at 19,000 Qld has really ramped up their testing.

Currently Victoria has 45 active cases including 12 returned overseas travellers, NSW has 199 active cases excluding 79 returned overseas travellers and Qld has 20 active cases all returned overseas travellers.

There 41 patients in hospital Australia wide due to the virus.  One in NSW, 21 in Qld and 19 in NT, it would be reasonable to assume that the majority of these are returned overseas travellers.  These figures are creeping up slightly however currently they are not resulting in an increase in virus related deaths.

Worldwide the figures are still crap.  In there the last two days there has been daily increases in the number of infections of 836,000 and 745,000 taking the total number of infections worldwide for the pandemic to over 90 million.  In the last two days worldwide deaths were reported at 14,530 and 13,641 bringing the total number of deaths to 1,934,801.

These are not the highest daily figures recorded worldwide but are still amongst the highest.  There is no sign of any meaningful decline in either the infection of death figures.

The USA, Germany and UK are all reporting record highs exceeding their 2nd wave figures and Germany and UK have gone back into stringent lockdowns, although not as draconian as what we experienced here in Victoria.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread.
