Blog Day 290 - Monday 11 January 2021

Forecast 38 degrees today, the hottest day in 12 months.  It has been a mild summer do far and we haven't experienced any run of high temperature days so far.  The forecast for the rest of the week is for one day of 34 and the rest in the low twenties.  At 11.00pm in the morning it is already 32 degrees however with the air con on it is a comfy 22 indoors.

And now for the much awaited update on the cricket.  It is day 5 at the SCG, the last day of the 3rd test between Australia and India.  India is batting in it's 2nd innings and is 3 for 138 chasing 407 to beat Australia with two and a half sessions of play remaining.

After a bit of hysterical toing and froing it appears that the Brisbane test is going to go ahead on 15/1 with the crowd restricted to 50% of the GABBA capacity.

Victoria has recorded it's 5th day of no local infections and had one new infection who was a returned overseas traveller in the last 24 hours.  NSW reported 11 new infections in the last 24 hours, 3 of which were local from known clusters and 8 were returned overseas travellers.  Qld reported 4 new cases, all returned overseas travellers.  Victoria, NSW and Qld all reported on the results of between 18,000 and 19,000 tests in the last 24 hours.

Currently there are 313 active virus cases Australia wide including 91 returned overseas travellers but excluding 78 overseas travellers in NSW.  Victoria has 40 active cases including 17 returned overseas travellers, NSW has 199 active cases excluding 78 returned overseas travellers and Qld has 25 active cases, all returned overseas travellers.

The hospitalisation numbers are still increasing from 41 to 47 in the last 24 hours Australia wide, including 1 in ICU in NSW.

Both infection numbers and death numbers worldwide are down on previous days, but as usual this probably more to do with idiosyncrasies of reporting over the weekend than a genuine reduction in the numbers. Although I say that the worldwide numbers are down there was still 586,000 new infections and 7,589 new deaths.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread.
