Blog Day 296 - Sunday 17 January 2021

 Day 3 of the crucial 4th test between Australia and India being played at the Gabba.  Approaching lunch India is 3 for 144 trailing Australia's 1st inning score by 225 runs.  A wicket has fallen as I type this so India is now 4 for.  I think that you will all agree that this is nail biting stuff.

Now for some more tennis stuff.  There are 47 tennis players in strict hard quarantine lockdown due to them having arrived into Melbourne in two aircraft where they may have been exposed to the virus. These players will be unable to leave their rooms for their allocated 5 hours of practice, preparation and training.  The AO is due to begin on 8 Feb so you can imagine the damage this is going to do to these players preparation.  And boy are they having a whinge about it and not getting much sympathy from the locals.

Victoria has recorded 11 days of zero community transmissions and reported 7 new cases in the last 24 hours, all ROTs.  NSW has reported 9 new cases, 6 of which are community transmissions from a known source and 3 are ROTs.  Qld has reported 2 new cases, all ROTs.  Australia wide there were 18 new cases reported of which 12 were ROTs.

These reported cases were as a result of 11,000 tests in Victoria, 12,800 in NSW and 5,800 in Qld.  These test numbers are down on previous days but I suppose as the community transmission numbers drop people become less inclined to line up for hours for testing, reasoning that their sore throat is unlikely to be due to the virus.

Currently Victoria has 30 active cases including 16 ROTs, NSW has 122 cases excluding 76 ROTs and Qld has 31 active cases, all ROTs.  Australia wide there are 224 active cases including 88 ROTs but excluding NSW's 76 ROTs.

Australia wide there are 47 people in hospital due to the virus, none in Victoria.  There are 2 patients in ICU, one in NSW and one in Qld.  The hospitalisation figures have been in the 40s for some time now and this is the first time Oct 2020 that there has been more than one person in ICU.

Worldwide there were 667,000 thousand new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 14,300 deaths.  Of these the US reported 210,000 new infections and 3,300 deaths and the UK reported 56,000 new infections and 1,300 deaths.  Remember folk that these figures for the US and UK are for the last 24 hours only!

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread; try not to spend too much at Bunnings; bowls is the only game where the players are allowed to have a bias.
