Blog Day 310 - Sunday 31 January 2021

 Victoria's run of zero local infections continues, we are now up to day 25 and the other states are continuing to record similar zero days.  WA is opening its borders to Victorians and Queenslanders in the coming week, meaning folk from those states can visit WA without having to do the 14 day quarantine thing.

It looks like once the vaccine is available pharmacists will be able to give us the jab.  The federal government is in discussions with the pharmacist's governing body to put this in place.  Pharmacists have been giving flu jabs for a number of years now in Victoria at least, so probably no reason they can't do the virus vaccine as well.

Most of the tennis players have now come out of quarantine and are able to practise in preparation for the AO.  The state government has approved public attendance at the tournament at 50% of capacity which will mean between 25,000 and 30,000 members of the public can attend each day.

Victoria and Qld both recorded zero new cases in the last 24 hours and NSW recorded three, all ROTs.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 10,700 tests, NSW 8,800 and Qld 4,500.  I know that these test numbers are way down but given the lack of community transmissions it is understandable that less people are presenting themselves for testing.  We have seen in the past that one or two reported local cases sends the testing numbers back up again.

Victoria is still reporting traces of the virus in sewage in a number of local government areas.  The health authorities think that these traces may be from people shedding the virus.  They have requested that anybody show any symptoms of the virus in these areas, no matter how minor, present themselves for testing immediately.

Victoria currently has 20 active virus cases, all ROTs, NSW has 21 active cases plus 41 ROTs and Qld has 6 active cases also all ROTs.  Australia wide there are 68 active cases, including 46 ROTs plus NSW's 41 ROTs.

Worldwide in the last 24 hours there were 525,000 new infections reported, this is down from 575,000 reported in the previous 24 hours however it is still within the range reported in the last week.  There were 13,700 deaths reported in the last 24 hours down from 15,000 the day before.  Given the daily fluctuations it is difficult to determine if there is any meaningful reduction in the numbers of new infections and deaths, however the trend would appear to be moving down slowly.

In the US as at 30/1 the daily new infection number was 163,000 this currently appears to be holding steady.  At least the trend is not going up.  The US reported 3,500 deaths in the 24 hours of 30/1 this is showing an ever so slight downward trend.

The story in the UK is similar, with them reporting 29,000 new infection for 30/1 and this appears to he holding steady.  The UK reported 1,250 deaths for the same period which appears to be steady, maybe slightly downward.

Covid Safe Summer Reminders;

Remember; stay safe and sober for the new year, I know I will be; no hugging and kissing strangers on new years eve!; don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things; as the captain of the Graf Spee said "you have to be bigger than anything faster and faster than anything bigger"; to wear your mask indoors (again); if you have a tickle in your throat, get tested (again); to add Brissie to your list of places to avoid; at a 1st birthday party be first in line for the fairy bread; try not to spend too much at Bunnings; bowls is the only game where the players are allowed to have a bias; if you see a big hole, take a photo; vote 1 Trump in four years time; brighten up your day by patting a puppy; don't start lining up for your jab yet; if it is 40 degrees where you are keep up your fluid intake, I know that I will be; if you venture outdoors take your umbrella; maybe avoid the Sputnik V vaccine.
