Blog Day 360 - Tuesday 23 March 2021'

Would you believe that today is the 12 month anniversary of the premier's famous "you can't get on the beers speech", which heralded the start of the corona virus restrictions and lockdowns.

Who would have thought that 12 months after that declaration that we would still be worried about daily corona virus infection figures, still be living under restrictions of numbers in public and private gatherings, would still be wearing masks, still be living with border closures and restrictions, still have no overseas travel, still have Daniel Andrews as premier with him and his merry bunch of incompetents responsible for over 800 deaths in this state and a second and more stringent lockdown.

Meanwhile worldwide in the last 12 months there has been 124,000,000 million corona virus infections and 2,734,000 deaths.  If you had been living in an igloo at the north pole for the last year or so with no communication if somebody told you these figures you wouldn't believe them.

When you look at the worldwide figures Victoria and Australia have done remarkably well.  For comparison purposes Chile has a population of 19 million and 22,000 virus related deaths; Romania also has a population of 19 million and 22,000 deaths compared to Australia with a population of 26 million and 909 deaths.  Although then you have countries like Taiwan with a population of 24 million with 10 deaths.

There appears to be little rhyme or reason with the casualty rate of the virus, countries with similar populations, standards of living and standards of health services reported widely different infection and death rates.  While some countries appear to have the virus under control, particularly the US and UK other countries are experiencing either continuations of their 2nd wave or a new 3rd wave of the virus, particularly Brazil, France, Italy, Spain and the Balkan countries.

Whoever is pretending to be premier of this state this week has announced that from 26 March  there will be a further relaxation of the virus rules.  Masks will only need to be worn in limited circumstances such as on public transport, in Ubers/taxis and in nursing homes etc, limits on groups in private homes will be lifted from 30 to 100 and in public spaces from 100 to 200.

Anyway, enough of the reminiscing about the good old days of lockdown and quarantine and lets have a look at the current situation.

Victoria has today reported "all the zeros", no new infections, zero active cases etc.  We have been 25 days without a local infection and it is the first time since 10/12/20 that we haven't had any active cases in the state.

Australia wide there were 7 new infections recorded, 4 in NSW and 3 in Qld, all ROTs.

The only figures available for test results are from Victoria with 13,500 results received in the last 24 hours.

Currently there are 145 active virus cases nationally and 142 of those are ROTs.  There are 57 cases in NSW, 55 of them ROTs and 58 in Qld of which 57 are ROTs.

Australia wide we have vaccinated 287,000 people which accounts for 1.1% of the population.

Worldwide there were 422,860 new infections and 7,418 deaths.  Although hard to tell I would say that the worldwide figures are declining slightly although given the variation in both the new infection and death figures it is hard to say.

The US reported 33,000 new infections for the 24 hours 22/03 and 429 deaths for the same period.  The UK reported 5,400 new infections and 34 deaths for the same 24 hour period.  The US and UK are both continuing to record significant reductions in both daily infections and deaths.

Just for comparison Brazil reported 48,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and India 47,000.

Brazil has a population of approximately 213 million and to date has reported 12 million infections for the pandemic and 296,000 deaths.  India has a population of 1.4 billion folk and has also reported 12 million infections, but India with similar number of infections has reported 160,000 deaths or 46% less than Brazil's.  Go figure

Covid Normal Reminders;

Remember: not to look for naked ladies in every ink blot; to collect your Frequent Flyer points, you might be able to use them one day; don't burn your leaves in the gutter; don't air the family's dirty laundry in public; to be careful on wet & slippery staircases; cancel your holiday to Brazil; you can "get on the beers".
