Blog Day 367 - Tuesday 30 March 2021

Hmmm, seemed to have missed a couple days somewhere here, but no worries, life in the the covid world goes on.

This time 12 months ago I was wrestling with the vagaries of zoom and had just experienced my first zoom drinks session.  Little did we know at that stage how familiar, and dependent, we would all become on zoom.

Twelve months ago the blog had also featured the first of the "What's in the Pantry" segments featuring the makins for a bloody mary.  Little did we know that was going to develop into a popular and long running segment.

Talk about long running, 12 months down the track and Brisbane has gone into a 3 day lockdown with two virus clusters breaking out in that state.  Currently there are two clusters totalling 18 local infections all sourced from infections from 2 ROTs being treated in a Brisbane hospital.  A doctor caught the virus from a ROT from Qatar and a nurse from a ROT from India.

Unfortunately the nurse and her sister, who were both infectious attended a bachelorette party in Byron Bay infecting five other bachelorettes plus the male "entertainer".

Victoria has declared the Greater Brisbane area a red zone and Byron Bay an amber zone.  This means that various travel restrictions apply to travellers from Victoria attending these areas and then attempting to travel home.  Upon return from a red zone a traveller has to quarantine immediately, get tested within 72 hours and then quarantine again until the test results are received.  And did I mention that Easter and school holidays start at the end of this week!  Who is going to Brissy for their holiday??

Victoria reported one new case over the last couple of days, an airline crew member who is in hotel quarantine.  We have gone 32 days without a new locally acquired infection, however we still are not taking any ROTs.  Brisbane is a good example of the dangers of taking ROTs.

In the last 24 hours there were 18 new cases reported Australia wide of which 10 were ROTs.  Victoria reported all the zeroes again, NSW 5 new cases all ROTs and Qld 10 new cases of which only two were ROTs.

Vaccinations are continuing to roll out with a total of 560,000 vaccinations applied Australia wide which is a tad over 2% of the population.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 13,000 tests, NSW 7,300 and Qld 14,600.  It looks like Qld is ramping up its testing regime.

Currently there are 164 active cases Australia wide, of which 147 are ROTs.  Victoria has one active a case, a ROT, NSW has 54 active cases of which 52 are ROTs and Qld has 78 active cases including 73 ROTs.

In the last 24 hours worldwide there were 390,000 new infections and 6,172 deaths.  These figures appear to be on the increase again especially in places such as Brazil and France.  Brazil reported 44,000 new infections on 29/3 and 86,000 on 28/3.

For the 24 hours of 29/03 the US reported 43,000 new infections and 506 deaths.  The UK reported 3,900 new infections and 21 deaths for the same period.

The US decline in new infections seems to have stalled a bit however the UK new infection and death figures are continuing to decline.
