Blog Day 378 - Saturday 10 April 2021

One slightly coolish day and the fashionista streets of Bentleigh East are awash with soccer moms in their black Kathmandu  puffer jackets.  White runners and jeans with holes in them also seem de rigeur for the fashion set.  Nice to see mothers and daughters dressed like twins.

The big news is of course the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.  HRH had been ill this year and had spent time in hospital with an infection and then experienced heart problems after that.  He was 99 years old and not far off his 100th birthday, now we will never know if was going to receive his 100th birthday telegram from his wife.  The Duke was born in 1921, the same year as my mother, who would have turned 100 in February although she died some years ago.  We have been advised that he did not die of a corona related illness.

The other big news is that Victoria although recording 43 days with no local transmissions of the virus now has reported one infectious case of an ROT in hotel quarantine.

Australia wide there has been 6 new cases reported Australia wide, all ROTs; one in Victoria; four in NSW and 1 in Qld.

These results are the outcome of 13,000 test results received in Victoria in the last 24 hours; 8,700 in NSW and 7,400 in Qld.  These numbers are pretty low, however we do know that they ramp up very quickly if there is a virus scare on.

Currently there are 132 active cases Australia wide of which 115 are ROTs.  Victoria has one active case, a ROT; NSW has 43 active cases of which 42 are ROTs and Qld has 63 active cases of which 47 are ROTs.

Still difficult to get a handle on the vaccination rollout given the difficulty in determining who has had two shots and is therefore fully vaccinated and who has had one shot only.  To date there has been 1,090,160 doses of the vaccine administered in Australia of which Victorians have received 142,130.

It looks like 29,000 Victorians may have had two doses although this figure does not include any Victorians inoculated through the Federal Govt scheme.

The following table will give you an idea of where the rest of the world is up to in the vaccination stakes.  The US is the clear leader with nearly 175 million doses administered, the UK is next with 38 million doses.  By this table Australia hasn't quite reached the million mark although this information could be 24 hours old.

Talking about the rest of the world, things aren't too flash there at the moment.  Worldwide the daily infection figures continue to increase with 707,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours.  The death figures continue to reflect the increase in infections with nearly 15,000 and 14,000 deaths reported in the last two days.

The US appears to be treading water a bit with new daily infections creeping up slightly with 79,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 974 deaths in the same period.

The UK is still the success story of the moment with 3,100 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 53 deaths in the same period.  It is sad that we think that 53 deaths in a day is good news.

Now lets get to the basket cases.  France reported 97,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and 752 deaths, although I think that there is some adjustments in these figures to catch up with some under reporting in the last couple of days.

No danger of under reporting in Brazil, I hope, with 87,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 4,249 deaths.

Turkey's new infection figures continue to increase rapidly with 56,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours although their death rate continues to remain reasonably low at 258 in 24 hours.  Given the rate of new infections the death rate has to increase in due course.

Every now and again I remind myself no matter what problems we have with the virus and the vaccination rate how lucky we are to be living in this country.  Compared to most of the rest of the world we have always been the "lucky country", even more so now.
