Blog Day 379 - Sunday 11 April 2021

Dreary old day in Melbourne town today, 15 degrees max and heavy rain all morning.

Nothing much to write about today, the two items dominating the news, apart from the football here in Melbourne, are stories about the life, times and passing of Prince Phillip and the roll out of the virus vaccines in Australia and the associated problems.

In a couple of weeks time I am driving up to the Hunter Valley to meet up with Flashy and Lady P and some other friends from their neck of the woods (FNQ) for a few days of eating and drinking and general gluttony.  I will take a few days to drive up probably travelling by an inland route and a few days to drive home probably down the coast.  Of course all of this is dependant on borders being open and unrestricted travel being available.

Given today is an indoors day I might start planning the trip and organising accommodation for the journey.  Flashy and Lady P have arranged accommodation in the Hunter Valley in a large house on a winery near Broke. I have probably given Flashy more credit for arranging this than he deserves and not nearly enough recognition of Lady P's efforts in this regard.

Not much happening on the corona virus front in Australia.  Victoria has recorded 44 days without local infections and we have only one ROT currently in quarantine.  NSW reported 6 new cases in the last 24 hours and these were all ROTs.  The NSW cases are the only cases reported Australia wide in the last 24 hours.

Currently there are 122 active cases Australia wide of which 106 are ROTs.  Victoria has one active case, a previously reported ROT; NSW has 43 active cases of which 42 are ROTs and Qld has 57 active cases of which 42 are ROTs.

So far there has been 1,140,153 doses of the vaccine administered Australia wide by state governments, federal government and GPS.  These figures still do not tell us how many people are fully vaccinated (2 jabs) and how many people have only had one jab.

Worldwide there were 602,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours and 12,681 deaths.  The total number of deaths worldwide for the pandemic is now 2,914,575.  The daily new infection figures and death figures are remaining stubbornly high.

The US reported 82,000 new infections in the last 24 hours which is their highest daily infection figure since 25/03 and one of the highest for some months.  The US also reported 942 deaths in the same period.

The UK figures have for the last 24 hours show an adjustment to the daily new infections of a reduction of 4,787 infections, must be a reconciliation of some sort.  The UK reported 60 deaths in the last 24 hours which is slightly higher than recent days.

Brazil reported 93,000 new infections in the last 24 hours which is their highest figure since 26/03.  Impossible to imagine what sort of pressure these figures are putting on the health system day in day out.  Brazil also recorded 3,700 deaths in the same 24 hour period.

France hasn't reported any figures for new infections or deaths for the last 24 hours so no idea of what is happening there.

At 56,000 new infections in the last 24 hours Turkey's infections continue to increase.  However at 253 deaths in the last twenty four hours the death rate is remaining stable.
