Blog Day 393 - Sunday 25 April 2021 (Anzac Day)
Just arrived in Dubbo on my drive to the Hunter Valley. I have checked into my motel and considering whether I should go to the Bowling Club, the local RSL or a neaby pub for a beer to clear the dust of the road from my throat.
Last night I stayed in Hay and my word I had forgotten how flat and featureless the Hay plains are. Funny story, as I was driving towards Hay I could see these large buildings in the distance, a few ks south of the town and nothing around them.
As I got closer I became more intrigued as to what they were. Anyway, there was a sign near the truck entrance saying 'Ascot gin' and I thought that is a funny place for a gin distillery, must need the large building to store all the juniper berries. As I drove further along I came across the main entrance and a bigger more informative sign, which told me that it is actually a cotton gin, not a gin distillery.
When I checked into the motel in Hay I told the lady there the story and she though it was very funny. She reckons that cotton gin is the largest in Australia if not the southern hemisphere.
The lady in the check in, although probably half my age, still referred to me as 'young man' which I took as a compliment.
So far I have done close to one thousand ks with another 350 to do tomorrow. There is lunch booked at a fancy smanchy restaurent for lunch so I had better make sure that I get there on time.
Driving here today I drove past the famous radio telescope at Parkes that featured in the movie the Dish. Although I didn't call in to visit it is quite clearly visible from the road. I suppose if it can receive signals from millions of miles away in space it should be visible to the eye from a few hundred metres.
That will do for, I haveno real idea what is happening virus wise and really won't care for the next few days. Maybe until I have to get back into Victoria,
No photos so far but I am sure that there will be plenty over the next few days.
Loved the movie “The Dish”. Quite an adventure you’re on. Happy holidays.
