Blog Day 409 - Tuesday 11 May 2021

I have had my 1st AstraZeneca vaccination shot this morning.  I attended Moorabbin Hospital at about 9.15am in the morning for my 9.30 appointment.  Although this clinic has been up and running for a few days now there still seemed to be a bit of confusion around the place and some of the staff seemed to be a little uncertain of their job roles.  However, despite this I was processed politely and professionally and was done and dusted by 10.00am.

Upon arrival I was checked in, my Medicare details were recorded and I was taken to a waiting room with about 3 or 4 other people.  After a short wait a nurse came along and stuck a number on my chest and then I was taken to another room.  My details were checked again and I had to answer some questions about my medical history and previous vaccinations and I was provided with a handout detailing various symptoms I may experience after the vaccination.

The vaccination itself was the easiest part of the entire process.  The needle must be incredibly thin as there is no sensation of the injection being given, and unlike the flu vaccine there is no requirement for a Band-Aid as there is no blood on the injection location.

After the injection I was taken to a another waiting room where another staff member recorded my time of admittance and told when my 15 minutes wait time was up, asked me if I felt OK and I walked out the door.

I have an appointment for my 2nd vaccination for Tuesday 3 August.

There has just been a news report of a man in Victoria testing positive for corona.  Apparently he has returned from overseas and has completed his 14 day quarantine in SA.  He arrived in Victoria from SA on 4/5 and developed symptoms on 8/5, was tested on 10/5 and a positive result was received on 11/5. Further investigations are taking place and hopefully contact tracing is well in hand.

I wonder where he arrived from, probably Ireland.

Not much to report Aus wise, apart from one possible community transmission in Victoria as described above.  Apart from that, Australia wide there were 7 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, all ROTs.  There are currently 192 active cases Australia wide, 186 of those being ROTs.  There are 30 people in Australia due to the virus with two in ICU.

As at 10/05 there had been 2,683,188 doses of the virus vaccine administered Australia wide and after my effort this morning we can make that 2,683,189, well done that man!

The international figures are still reflecting the reporting hiatus from the weekend apart from India which in the 24 hours of 9/5 reported 403,000 new infections and 4,077 deaths.

I see that the virus has spread from India to Bhutan putting their hospital system under intense pressure.  The Bhutanese government has requested mountain climbers to bring back empty oxygen bottles dumped in the Himalayas to be refilled and used in their hospitals.

Desperate times indeed.
