Blog Day 413 - Saturday 15 May 2021

The economic repercussions of the covid lockdowns are appearing the raise their ugly heads.  I reckon that there are more empty shops in Bentleigh East at the moment than any other time of the pandemic.  There are also a couple of businesses that appear to be on limited trading hours.  Usually empty shops in this area are reoccupied fairly quickly, it will be interesting to see how quickly somebody moves into these vacant shops.

Nothing too much to report on the home front.  No new local infections Australia wide and only 7 ROTs.  This could have been a different story if the if the 42 infected Australian citizens and the 31 close contacts of these infected people who are also Australian citizens had been allowed to join the first repatriation flight out of India last night.  There was to be about 150 passengers on the Qantas flight out of India however 42 of these passengers tested positive to the virus during their 3 day hotel isolation prior to joining the flight, consequently they and their close contacts were prevented from joining the flight.

The testing numbers in Australia are remaining reasonably high with the results of 15,000 test received in both Victoria and NSW in the last 24 hours.  The number of vaccine doses administered in Australia has cracked the 3 million mark, well done those folk, me included.

Worldwide the figures for new infections and deaths appears to levelling of but not reducing.  India has not reported any figures for 14/5.  You will see from the table below that the world figures are significantly underreported due to the lack of information from India.  The worldwide new infection figure for 13/5 was 760,000 which included 363,000 new infections in India or 48% of the worldwide figures.  Likewise the worldwide the reported number of deaths for 13/5 was 14,000 which included 4,000 deaths in India or 30% of the worlwide figures.

For your information and edification I have also included a current table of the leaders in the vaccination race plus Australia and NZ.

With 267 million doses administered I am not sure why the US does not appear on this table, however it appears that they are certainly getting on with the job (or I could have said getting on with the jab, but I am pleased that I didn't).
