Blog Day 432 - Saturday 05 June 2021 - Day 9 Lockdown Version 4
It looks like the Feds and state government have come to some sort of agreement on the construction of a self contained purpose built quarantine facility. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed wherein the Feds provide $300 million to build the facility, and here is the chink in the armour, the state is going to run it. Good luck with that.
They are still in discussions as to whether the facility is going to be built at Avalon or Mickleham. I guarantee that wherever it is built the guy that turns up with a shovel to dig the first hole will find the entire site is contaminated with asbestos and old car batteries. The guy that turns up with a chain saw to cut down the only tree on the site will discover that it is an ancient red gum and is sacred to some group or another. Am I getting a bit cynical here?
Based on previous experiences with projects in this state this will triple the cost and blow out the completion time to sometime in 2028.
The AFL footy team known as the Adelaide Crows has been fined $50,000 by the AFL because some of its players and officials did not wear their masks on the flight from Sydney to Adelaide last weekend.
And whilst on sport, which I love so much, I see that Singapore has cancelled its running of the F1 Grand Prix for the second year running. The race was to be held on October 1 to 3. Melbourne is due to host its rescheduled Grand Prix early November this year, will this also be cancelled?
Victoria has reported 5 new local covid infections in the last 24 hours, three of which are known contacts of infected persons and already in quarantine. The authorities have no idea of where the other two picked up the virus. They do know that it is, and I quote, "the highly infectious Delta variant". There are nine infected folk in Melbourne with the Delta variant. It is of some concern that the health authorities still do not know the source of this variant in Victoria. The genomic tracking people say it could be from an unknown breach of hotel quarantine. This is of concern not only to the authorities but also to the rest of us.
There are currently 69 community cases in Victoria, down from 70 as one case has been classed as recovered. Australia wide there are 19 people in hospital due to the virus, of these 3 are in hospital in Victoria, there are none in ICU.
In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 36,400 tests and 49,000 the day before. These numbers are down on the numbers tested over the previous few days.
Worldwide the total infections and deaths seem to be holding reasonably steady. The Indian 24 hour new infection figures have been dropping rapidly, so much so that I had concerns over the accuracy of the figures. However the decline in the new infection figures in India appear to be part of trend so hopefully they are getting things under control.
No such success in Brazil with their daily infection figures exceeding 83,000 and the daily death figures regularly exceeding 2,000.
The USA and Turkey figures continue to decline. The UK figures are up a bit but they are working off such a low base any movement seems to be exaggerated.
Japan, who is sticking to its guns over running the Olympics is still reporting between 2,000 and 3,000 new infections per day and in excess of 100 deaths per day. Anybody going to go and cheer on the green and gold rock climbing team?
