Blog Day 512 - Thursday 26 August 2021 - Day 21 of Covid Lockdown V6.0

As a bit of a distraction from the covid stuff going on around us I have been keeping an eye on the air traffic in and out of Kabul in Afghanistan by way of the "flightradar24" app.

Apart from military aircraft flying directly to and from Kabul airport to airports in the UAE and the odd US air force refuelling tanker flying in lazy loops near the Afghani/Pakistan border there are no other aircraft flying in Afghani airspace.

Interestingly at 12.30pm (AEST) today which is around 7.00am this morning in Kabul, when I am typing this part of the blog, there is not one aircraft flying in Afghani airspace.  Usually when I have a look there are at least 4 or 5 American aircraft in the air over Afghanistan or on the ground at Kabul plus a couple of RAF aircraft and one or two from other countries including Australia.

I have no idea how many of the massive Boeing C17 Globemasters the US has but there has often been 8 or 9 of them in the air at any one time.

All the commercial flights in the area whilst flying very close to the Afghani borders are obviously very carefully not flying over the border.

A little later, there must have been some sort of curfew at Kabul airport, there are now a number of military transport aircraft heading towards Kabul including a RAAF Hercules.

Now onto the real blog business, what is happening in corona virus world.

Victoria reported 80 new infections in the last 24 hours, of these 41 had been in the community whilst infectious.  Victoria received the results of 56,000 tests in the last 24 hours.  What are our chances of coming out of lockdown on 02/09 as scheduled?

NSW has broken another record with 1,034 new infections in the last 24 hours and 919 in the twenty four hours prior to that. NSW also reported another 3 deaths due to the virus.  Whilst setting records for daily infections NSW is also setting records for the number of tests conducted with the results of 172,000 tests received in the last 24 hours.

There are currently 764 patients in hospital Australia wide due to the virus of which 696 are from NSW and 36 from Victoria.  NSW has 115 patients in ICU and 68 on ventilators.

Australia wide 31.6% of the eligible population are fully vaccinated and 54.4% have received their 1st injection.  Tasmania leads the vaccination race with 38% of its eligible population vaccinated and WA is coming last with 28%.  Most of the other states are around the 30% mark.

By way of comparison Canada has fully vaccinated 66% of it's eligible population; the UK 62% and USA 52%.  (I have tried to find a table that I can cut and paste of countries and their level of vaccination but I can't find one that will fit into the blog format, I will keep looking).

So, just the Australian figures below, not looking good in NSW and a bit of concern here in Victoria.

Walkies time  here as well, it is a bit coolish here today so might be donning coats and beanies.
