Blog Day 541 - Friday 24 Sept 2021 - Day 50 of Covid Lockdown V6.0 Extended

After a week or so of other distractions including earthquakes, riots and not to mention the AFL grand final being played in Perth tomorrow I thought that I should get back to the roots of this blog and talk a bit about this pandemic thing that is going around.

Before I get onto the pandemic it might be timely to remind you that today is a public holiday in Victoria, for what reason I hear you ask?  Today's public holiday is to celebrate the AFL grand final which I remind you isn't even being held in Melbourne this year.  This public holiday is also to allow the masses that follow the footy to attend the grand final parade through the CBD, oh, I forgot there won't be grand final parade through the city this year.  What excuse will portly 40 year olds have to wear their team's footy jumper this year without looking like a right dick.

The Victorian road map out of this mess has been in place for nearly a week now and we are going to miss our first pit stop.  Phase A was to kick off on Sunday 26th September when we were to hit 80% of the eligible population vaccinated with one dose.  We are not going to make the 80% mark until later in the week.  Looking good folk.

Currently Australia wide 74.1% of the eligible population has received their initial dose of the vaccine and 49.3% has been double dosed.  In Victoria the figures are 75.4% and 45.9% respectively.

Victoria's daily new infections are continuing to rise with a commensurate increase in the number of deaths.  In the last 24 hours 733 new infections were reported in this state with 745 the day before and 620 the day before that.  In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 57,000 tests and administered 96,000 vaccination doses.  Currently in Victoria there are 297 people in hospital due to the virus with 66 in ICU and 41 on ventilators.  In the past 24 hours 1 person died due to the virus with 4 deaths in the previous 24 hours.

NSW daily new infections are decreasing slightly, in the last 24 hours they recorded 1,044 new infections from 132,000 test results.  Last week NSW was reporting daily infection rates of 1,300 plus.  NSW is administering between 120,000 and 130,000 vaccine doses per day.

There doesn't appear to be any significant movement in the worldwide figures either up or down.

In the USA the following figures were reported for the last three days;

23/9    New infections     133,000        Deaths    2,800
22/9                                  121,000                       2,300
21/9                                  202,000                       2,300

UK

23/9                                   34,000                          168
22/9                                   31,000                          204
21/9                                   36,000                            50

Worldwide

23/9                                   538,000                        10,100
22/9                                   469,000                          9,100
21/9                                   540,000                          8,200

The US figures although varying widely day to day appear to be holding steady, the UK figures appear to be creeping up a bit and the worldwide figures appear to also be holding steady.  It would be nice to see these figures declining instead of holding steady or gradually increasing.
