Blog Day 542 - Saturday 25 Sept 2021 - Day 51 of Covid Lockdown V6.0 Extended

Not that I have any great interest in it, today is AFL grand final day with the big game being played in Perth between the Footscray team, known as the Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne team known as the Melbourne Demons.  For those of you who aren't familiar with the AFL, such as my legion of overseas readers, these two clubs are probably two of the most unsuccessful clubs in the AFL in the modern era.

The Bullies have only won two grand finals in their entire history, the first in 1954 and the most recent in 2016.  The Demons won a heap of grand finals in the 1950's and 60's but haven't won one since 1964.

As you may be able to understand having these two teams, who are generally at the bottom of the ladder, playing in a grand final is a huge thing for their many supporters.  I genuinely feel sorry for these supporters that, due to covid restrictions, the game is being played in Perth WA.  The game couldn't be any further away from Melbourne and still be in the same country.

Talking about footy, one of the giants of the game died recently and I speak of John (Jack) Elliott who passed away last Thursday aged 79.  Elliott was president of the Carlton Blues and wielded power and influence, not always for the good, over the club for many years.  He was also chairman of the Fosters group which controlled CUB, Elders IXL amongst others and was a force in  the Australian corporate world with the likes of the other mavericks such as Bond, Skase and Holmes a Court.

Elliott also had political aspirations and was treasurer and president of the Victorian and national arms of the Australian Liberal party in the late 80's and early 90's.  There was a plan to parachute him into a safe Liberal seat in the Federal parliament but, probably thankfully, this failed when the sitting member in the seat failed to give it up for Elliott.  If Elliott had of got into parliament he would have come up against Bob Hawke who was prime minister at the time, now that would have made for interesting politics.

Elliott had many ups and downs in his business career and private life.  His second wife divorced him after he sold their house to cover some business debts or legal fees.  He was made bankrupt in the early 2000s over a failed rice growing venture and was lucky to escape a gaol sentence in the early nineties over a breach or corporation law.

Probably won't see the likes of him again in business, sport or politics, mores the pity methinks.

Now here is a funny thing, my doorbell has just rung and there is nobody at the door and this is probably the third time this has happened in the last couple of days.  It is one of those wireless remote doorbells and I wonder if one of my neighbours is trying to put their roller door up or down and the roller door controller is on the same wave length as my doorbell. They are probably looking at their roller door controller wondering why the door isn't going up and down.

Ok enough of the jibber jabber and lets get on with the covid figures.

Nationally 74.8% of the eligible population have received their 1st dose of the vaccination and 50.1% have received their second dose. In Victoria the figures are 76.3% and 46.6% respectively.

In the last 24 hours Victoria reported 847 new covid infections. This is the highest number of new daily infections in Victoria for the whole pandemic, our previous highest was 725 new infections on 05/08/2020.  It is worth noting that on 02/08/2021 Victoria recorded 2 new daily infections, so in less than two months we have gone from almost no new daily infections to 847.

Today's new infection figure is as from the receipt of 59,000 tests results in the last 24 hours.

In Victoria one person died in the last 24 hours as a result of covid.  Currently in Victoria there are 321 patients in hospital due to covid with 65 in ICU and 41 on ventilators.

NSW reported 1,007 new infections in the last 24 hours from the results of 108,000 tests.  Sadly NSW reported 11 covid related deaths in the last 24 hours.  Of these 3 people died undiagnosed in their own homes.

Worldwide there were 479,000 new infections reported in the last 24 hours bringing total number of infections for the pandemic to 231,565,457.  There were 9,318 covid related deaths in the last 24 hours bringing the total number of deaths due to the pandemic to 4,728,481.

Makes you realise no matter how many stuff ups and cock ups we have had at the hands of the states and their premiers how lucky we have been in this little island fortress of ours.  Thank goodness for the steady and reliable guiding hand of the Prime Minister and the Federal government.

  1. Your doorbell ringing must be the family ghost. In my bedroom I have a ceiling light with a fan which can be controlled by a remote and 3 times in the last week the light has turned on when no-one has been in the house.

    1. What else don't I know about this family? I didn't know that we had a family ghost, I thought only royalty had family ghosts. I hope that it isn't great grandma Sutton, the peg leg going up and down the hallway all night would drive you mad.
