Blog Day 560 - Friday 15 October 2021 - Day 71 of Covid Lockdown V6.0 Extended

After a break for most of this year my U3A Maritime and Military History group has been reactivated by the magic that is Zoom.  We are going to continue to meet regularly by Zoom for the rest of this year and will revisit the situation for the start of the new year in 2022.

I have volunteered to do a couple of presentations to the group so I might get to do a presentation this year by Zoom or next year hopefully face to face.

Breaking news.  Southern Tasmania has gone into a snap three day lockdown after a positive traveller escaped from hotel quarantine on Tuesday.  The naughty escapee had flown in from Melbourne on Monday night and placed into hotel quarantine.  How he escaped is not known but the state premier has described him as uncooperative.  Seeing as how this chap flew into Tassie from Melbourne my sister, who lives in North Western Tasmania will somehow blame me and every other mainlander for this latest disaster to hit the Apple Isle.

Here we are, 10 weeks into the current lockdown and although this Victoria has moved from 'elimination' to 'minimisation' in dealing with the virus neither plan seems to be having much effect.

Although we are in the minimisation phase the lockdown rules being applied are still the exactly same as the elimination lockdown rules and although very stringent does not appear to be having any significant effect on the daily numbers.

Surely after ten weeks of lockdown there should be some reduction in the virus transmission numbers, it is not as if we have had a "freedom day" which would account for the continuing increase in daily infections

I am at a loss as to what is supposed to be happening in Victoria in this interim stage of leaving elimination behind and moving forward to minimisation.  Whatever it is it doesn't appear to be working with more than 2,000 new infections reported in the state in for each of the last two days.  Hospital, ICU and ventilator numbers continue to increase and there has been 13, 11 and 6 deaths in Victoria over the last three days.

The last few paragraphs have been clumsily worded which I think reflects what we are going through in this state at the moment and the frustration that we are all feeling with life in lockdown.  There appears to be a lack of leadership at all levels of government, The premier and labour government in Victoria have any number of distractions and the PM and the federal government are running around worrying about climate change and achieving zero carbon emissions in 2050 or sum such.  Maybe in the short term everybody should focus on the threat closer to home and affecting the real people of this state and country.

In case you feel my frustration is showing through you could be right, but I will be ok after a hearty meal of canned pickled mutton and fried spam from my Armageddon supplies.

I will post the tables below and you can have a look at em, some more reasoned analysis hopefully over the next couple of days.

  1. I may not blame you particularly, but if this chap is a representative of the general population of Victoria, I can now understand why you lot have been in lockdown for so long. Uncooperative is the polite way of putting it. Panic buying has started already.
