Blog Day 587 - Sunday 14 November 2021 - Day 16 of Covid Normal

A bit of a big day yesterday, I met some friends for lunch and a couple of drinks at the Auburn Hotel, previously known as The Geebung Polo Club.

I think that this may have been the first trip to a pub for some of us, including me, since coming out of lockdown and the draught beers were going down remarkably well.  And as the day and the evening wore on not only the beers were going down well but some wine and later a number of cocktails at various venues in the Hawthorn region.

Ubered safely home and feeling a little worse for wear this morning.  It was great to see the venues busy and lots of people out and about.

The vaccination rates continue to rise although slowing a little, currently Australia wide 90.3% of the eligible population have received their first dose and 82.8% are fully vaccinated.  In Victoria we are now measuring the figures for the eligible population of 16+ years of age and also the eligible population at 12+ years of age.

Currently the 16+ figure for 1st dose in Victoria is 92.7% and for 12+ it is 92.2%.  For fully vaxed, 87.1% of the 16+ population is double dosed and 86.1% of the 12+ eligible population.

The federal government has announced it will be rolling out vaccinations for the 5 to 11 year olds in January next year.  The dosage of the Pfizer vaccine for this age group is 10 micrograms compared to 30 micrograms for the adult dose.

Whilst the vaccination rates continue to rise the daily number of new infections continue to decline.  In Victoria in the last 24 hours we recoded 905 new infections compared to 1,221 in the previous 24 hours and 1,115 the day before that.

In the last 24 hours Victoria received the results of 64,000 tests.  Now here is a figure for you, during the full period of the pandemic, Australia wide there has been nearly 46,000,000 tests conducted, and that includes my two tests.  When you think about it this is a remarkable feat of logistics and public health.

A friend of mine who is a school teacher was designated a level two contact of an infected person and it was recommended that he undertake a rapid antigen test.  So down to the local pharmacy he hied and purchased a pack of 5 tests, tested himself and tested negative.

The high vaccination rates and the availability of rapid testing kits look like they may be the game changers that we have all been looking for.

Currently in Victoria there are 394 patients in hospital due to the virus, with 405 and 426 reported in the previous 2 days.  The ICU and ventilator numbers continue to decline with 75 patients currently in ICU and 46 on ventilators.  Unfortunately in Victoria we recorded 4 deaths in the last 24 hours and 4 more in the 24 hours before that.
