Blog Day 650 - Wednesday 19 January 2022 - Day 81 of Covid Nearly Normal

Just a very quick blog today as I want to comment on a couple of matters that have arisen over the last few days.

As I have said before, this virus thing is the gift that keeps on giving.

You may recall that yesterday I  made mention that the Victorian health system has declared a Code Brown emergency due to the number of covid patients in Victorian hospitals swamping the system. (I still can't believe that they have called it code brown).

As I recall when Victoria moved from the elimination model to the suppression model for the virus the modelling by the Doherty Institute stated that under the supression model hospital admission numbers would increase dramatically and I think suggested that the Victorian health system would be put under extreme pressure and was in danger of being swamped.

This warning came sometime in December so one has to ask the question, why are we running around now shouting "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" when we have had plenty notice that this event was likely to occur.  This seems to be the pattern in this state of ignoring events until it is almost too late and then everything becomes a major emergency.  Is this deliberate. it is easier to introduce draconian rules, eg restrictions on other hospital admissions etc, when the emergency is real rather than in preparation for an emergency.

Am I being too cynical here????

Now, how is this for a nice little cockup.  During this little crisis the State Government appointed some "Covid Compliance Officers" and these pretend coppers have been out and about issuing penalty notices and fines to folk for breaches of covid rules and regulations.

However, one teensy weensy problem, 40 out of the 100 or so Compliance Officers have not been authorised or "sworn" to issue fines.  Therefore the fines issued by the unsworn officers are probably unenforceable.  This little issue has been put down to an "administrative error".  I wonder if anybody will lose their job over this, I bet the department head still got their bonus.

Whether the fines are really enforceable of not is really neither here nor there as nobody is paying them anyway.  At last report, of the 44,681 covid fines issued only 8% were fully paid, another 8% were on payment plans, about 12% had been cancelled or withdrawn and for the rest the they just said "up yours copper"!

Talking about the police, did you hear that all the toilets at the police headquarters had been stolen, a police spokesperson said that "they had nothing to go on".

Cheers.........
