Blog Day 659 - Friday 28 January 2022 - Day 90 of Covid Nearly Normal

We have been experiencing what could only be described as tropical weather, hot, humid, rain and thunder storms.  The last four days has seen temperatures up to the mid 30's including 36 degrees one day.  Today is forecast to be 32 although it is 33.7 in my backyard at the moment, down to 25 tomorrow but then building back up to 30's on Monday.

As well as tropical levels of humidity we have had days or rolling thunderstorms and torrential rain with more on the way.

Talking to people at the Shrine yesterday it is obvious that people are still maintaining some level of self imposed isolation.  The other volunteers all agreed that they are avoiding places like shopping centres and are only going to places such as supermarkets when necessary.  Obviously the Shrine volunteers are from an older cohort and would be expected to be more cautious than most, but it is obviously quieter around the suburbs.  Although I haven't been into the CBD for some time, by all reports it also still very quiet.

Lots of people are still working from home, however the schools go back next week so things might liven up a bit then.

Vaccination rates are still going up albeit slowly, about .1% every couple of days for both 1st and 2nd injections.

As well the 1st and 2nd shots over 7,100,000 booster shots have also been administered nationally.

The covid figures are a bit grim today, although the daily new infection numbers are moving in the right direction the same can't be said for the daily covid death figures. 

The daily new infection numbers in Victoria are continuing to decline with 12,755 reported in the last 24 hours, this is down from a reported 18,000 a week ago.  NSW daily infection numbers are also still declining with 13,000 reported in the last 24 hours, down from 25,000 a week ago.

Unfortunately the daily virus death numbers are reflecting the high infection rates of a few weeks ago.  Victoria reported 39 deaths in the last 24 hours with 15 the day before and 54 the day before that.  These figures are a bit of a reminder of the bad old days of the pandemic, hopefully they won't continue and will eventually reflect the decline in new infections.

In the same three day period NSW reported 18, 15 and 9 deaths and Qld reported 28, 29 and 35 deaths.

The hospital numbers continue to decline with 988 covid patients currently in Victorian hospitals with 114 in ICU and 40 on ventilators.  I heard a report on the radio the other day that provided the percentages of unvaccinated people in hospital, however I can't find the details again.  From memory something like 85% of the people in hospital are unvaccinated and I daresay that percentage would be reflected in the death numbers.
