Wednesday 10 August 2022

Currently listening to a Spotify play list on my Sonos sound system which includes a lot of Seekers songs.  As you would be aware Judith Durham, the original female singer with the Seekers, passed away last week.  Then yesterday we got the news that Olivia Newton-John had also passed away.

Was there any red blooded young Aussie bloke who wasn't in love with Olivia in the 70's and 80's, I wouldn't think so.

Also last week we heard the the boxer Johnnie Famechon has also died.  All three died of natural causes, Judith and Olivia had both been ill for some time and Johnnie had serious health problems after a motor vehicle accident many years ago.

Which of the current wave of entertainment and sporting stars will be remembered so fondly as these three?  Maybe somebody from "The Voice" or "The Masked Singer", oh, I forgot we can't remember who was on these shows last week let alone years later.

Anyway must not be churlish.

Interesting table below showing the total deaths in Australia caused by covid for the entirety of the pandemic and the daily numbers for Tuesday 9th August broken down by age groups.  As usual these figures don't quite match the total deaths and daily deaths reported elsewhere but the general thrust of the figures is accurate enough to give a pretty good idea of the deaths by age group.

I have added in a column showing the % of deaths by age group as compared to the total number of deaths.  As can be seen the most dangerous age was the 80-89 age group with 36.00% of total covid related deaths.

To give this table some further relevance I tried to find a population distribution by the same 10 year age groupings as in the table below but was unsuccessful, I am sure that it is in the ABS figures somewhere but be blowed if I could find it.

I did find that 21.5% of Australians are aged between 55 and 74 and 7.5% are aged over 75.  Even using these figures it is obvious that the 70 pluses  at 84% of deaths are heavily overrepresented in the covid death figures, which we probably knew anyway.

I am pleased that I hadn't reached 70 when I had my dose of covid.

From the current daily and weekly figures both nationally and for Victoria it would appear that the current covid wave is on the decline.

Nationally 27,000 new covid cases were reported in the last 24 hours compared to 41,000 seven days ago.  In Victoria we reported 5,900 new cases in the last 24 hours compared to 9,100 seven days ago.

Victoria's covid hospitalisation numbers have decreased from 743 last week to 610 currently, ICU figures are down from 40 to 30 and there is still 8 covid patients on ventilators.

Victoria has been reporting extremely high death figures over the last seven days with 52 covid related deaths in the last 24 hours, however I understand that these high figures are as a catch up in reporting of previously unreported cases.  Hopefully these figures will now settle down a bit and we will be able to get a more accurate figure in the days to come.
