"The Queen is dead, long live the King"
Last Friday morning Australia woke to the news that Queen Elizabeth II passed away overnight and the new British (and Australian) monarch is King Charles III.
You may have missed this event as the media coverage has been minimal and restrained.....of course I am kidding....Martians could have landed and it would have been reported on page 10 of the newspapers after the multi-page coverage of all aspects of the Queen's life and that of the royal family.
Of course there is a huge amount of royal protocol around the death of a reigning sovereign and the ascension of the new monarch. This pomp and circumstance is ongoing with the funeral scheduled for Monday 19/09 at Westminster Abbey, after the body lying in state for four days.
The Queen was 96 when she died and had reined for 70 years, the longest reign of a monarch in British history. Of course even as a princess she was never intended to be queen. Her father the eventual King George VI only became king due to the abdication in 1936 of the queen's uncle King Edward VIII. (Remember Edward abdicated cause he wanted to marry an American divorcee......sound familiar??).
King Charles III has seen fit to promote Wills & Kate to Prince & Princess of Wales and Wills steps up to the next in line for the throne. Harry & Megs are wandering around looking like they have been sucking lemons, no promotion for them!
Rumour has it that on the announcement of the Queen's passing champagne corks could be heard popping at Fitzy & Wilko's place where a little celebration was held attended by all five members of ARM (the Australian Republic Movement).
Albo has declared next Thursday (22/09) a national day of mourning and a nationwide public holiday. Coincidently Friday 23/09 is also the AFL grand final public holiday in Victoria, so the great Aussie tradition of the long long weekend kicks in. I wonder how many loyal Victorians will be sitting at home with black crepe paper over their mirrors mourning the loss of the queen on this the national day of mourning.
The Federal & State CHO's have now agreed that covid figures will now only be released on a weekly basis with the first release on 16/09. The last daily release was last Friday 09/09. This means that I don't have any covid related numbers to report on today. Although it does appear that the Victorian covid hospitalization numbers are continuing to decline with only 229 covid patients currently reported with five in ICU.
So failing any other numbers at least the hospital numbers look promising.
Hopefully there will be more significant numbers to look at next week.
