Blog Day 8: Tuesday 31 March 2020

I have just discovered a irritating quirk with this this blog site, a certain combination of key strokes deletes all of the previous input and then saves a blank page over it.  So far this has happened three times and I am not very happy, but luckily I have plenty of time.

If like me you have plenty of time you may wish to take some courses in self improvement or just to improve your knowledge and fill in some time.  A site I have used is called Future Learn and they run courses provided by various universities and institutions around the world including our own Monash (my almer mater by the way), RMIT and Deakin amongst others.  The courses are usually free unless you want assessment and certification where a fee applies.  Most of the coursed run for around 10 weeks however there are some 3 to 4 week courses available.  The address is https://www.futurelearn.com.  Happy learning!

I have just returned from my well earned lunch break.  Lunch today was a delicious bacon and tomato sauce bread roll with a mandarin for afters accompanied by a long black coffee prepared in my reasonably new coffee machine, one that actually grinds the beans.  I don't usually have bacon in the house as it is too delicious and I could become addicted, however this bacon had been bought to take away camping on the camping trip that didn't occur.  So rather than see it go to waste in these difficult times I decided I had better scoff it, and I did.

Now for something a bit lighter, courtesy of Dave Martin:

'The English are feeling the pinch in relation to the virus threat and have therefore raised their threat level from "Miffed" to "Peeved".  Soon, though, level may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross".

The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.

The virus has been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance".  The last time the British issued "A Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Lets Get the Bastards". They don't have any other levels.  This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French Government announced yesterday that it has raised its alert level from "Run" to "Hide".  The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender".  The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory effectively paralyzing the country's military capacity.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing".  Two more levels remain; "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides".

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs".  They also have two higher levels; "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose".

Belgians on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual: the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of  Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines are ready to deploy.  These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its alert level from "No Worries" to "She'll be Alright Mate".  Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we will need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and  "The Barbie is Cancelled."  So far, no situation has ever warranted the use of the final escalation level.  (Until now notes GM).

The Chinese have said "Its not our fault".

Cheers and as Davey Crockett said "Remember the Alamo".

  3. Also I have used both edx.org and coursera.org for free online courses. Both are fantastic - the Melb Uni course on the French Rev was great. Open uni is also great but costs a lot.
