Blog Day 25: Friday 17 April 2020
Some of you would be aware that in less troubled times I volunteer at the Shrine of Remembrance. My little pop up diary thing on my phone has told me that today should have been Legacy day at the Shrine. Legacy day is part of a series of commemoration events at the Shrine leading up to Anzac Day and is usually attended by 4,000 to 5,000 school students. However unfortunately this year the Shrine is closed and there will be no public Legacy day commemoration. There will be a Legacy service in the Sanctuary but unfortunately this will be closed to the public, however it will be live streamed on Facebook.
The Education & Volunteer staff at the Shrine are doing a great job in maintaining contact with the volunteers by way of bi-weekly newsletters. The Ed staff have been running some competitions for the volunteers with tins of Anzac biscuits as prizes. For your information there are around 120 volunteers involved with the Shrine and most do one shift a week either in the morning or afternoon of their rostered day. We all pitch in for the ceremonial days such as Anzac day and Remembrance day. Well, no public Anzac day ceremonies this year although I understand that the various services (that will be closed to the public) will be televised and available on Facebook. Hopefully we will all be back on deck for Remembrance day and things will be somewhat back to normal.
The Shrine is taking the closure as an opportunity to undertake maintenance and inspections of the facilities and to program future maintenance. This is obviously easier to undertake without any public around or nosy volunteers who always have a contribution to make as to how to do things.
Last year for national volunteer week some of the Shrine volunteers were invited to Government House for morning tea with the Guv.

Like me I am sure that all the volunteers, particularly my fellow Thursday afternooners and the staff are keen to get back to our roles at the Shrine and to pass on the Shrine message to the students and visitors.
A couple of my pics of the Shrine just in case we have forgotten what it looks like.
Being Friday I am looking forward to the traditional Zoom trivia night with pizza and drinks. I am preparing my home made pizza this afternoon, the dough for the base is 'proving' as we speak.
