Blog Day 40: Saturday 02 May 2020

More traffic around today, are people already jumping the gun with more movement and less observation of social distancing and isolation?  From casual observation it would appear that more businesses are open of preparing to open. Some of the retail shops in Centre Road that were previously closed have reopened and others appear to be getting ready to do so.  I don't disagree with businesses reopening, we need to get the economy moving but lets hope that the appropriate protocols are followed and we don't have a second wave of virus infections.

Some of my more observant readers have suggested that I may have been a little grumpy yesterday, well we all have our ups and downs, even me. But back to my usual cheerful, optimistic self today.

Another exciting zoom trivia night last night with a large number of players split into various teams, can't remember who won but it wasn't team Graeme & Maddie, although we gave it a good shot.  As they used to say on the footy field "there is always next week".

Each day when I go for my walk I go past the local United service station in Centre Rd and I have been observing the recent drop in fuel prices.  Haven't seen prices like this in a long time.

Fuel prices 30 April 2020

I very sensibly filled up with fuel when all this corona virus thing started and as I am driving about 5km a week I still have a very full tank.  Not much opportunity to take advantage of the low prices yet.

The following is a photo of my grandfather, Allan Sutton, taken after he had enlisted to serve in the AIF in March 1917 in TGW.  At the time of his enlistment he was 17 and underage. The photo was most likely taken at Claremont military camp just out of Hobart during his training and prior to embarkation for overseas service in June 1917.  (He was wounded on the Western Front in March 1918).

That is my grandfather sitting in the sidecar.  The photo is actually on a postcard and was taken by a photographer from Glenorchy and after discussion with my sister (Lyn who sometimes makes comments on this blog) we believe that the motorbike is a prop provided by the photographer.  As I said before my grandfather was 17 when this photo was taken and the other three just look like boys as well.  As a corona virus project I am going to try and identify the other 3 lads and determine what their fate was, did they survive the war or, reminiscent of current times, did they succumb to the Spanish flu?  Lets try and find out.

Current virus stats as below, new infections and deaths all seem to be consistently low over the last few days. It will be interesting to see what happens with some states relaxing the iso rules.

Current Virus Day Stats: Day 117

Vic: 1,371 infected (+7 from previous day) - 18 deaths (increase 0)
Aus: 6,778 infected (+12 from previous day) - 93 deaths (increase 0)
Recovered: 5,775
World: 3,343,777
