Blog Day 52: Thursday 14 May 2020

Yesterday, I received a very nice letter from the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau, and I thought, this is it, as a reward for my many years of service to the community I have been awarded a MBE or an OBE maybe, a bit like the Beatles, alas not to be.  Although it wasn't an award it was a very nice letter all the same from the Guv thanking me and my fellow Shrine volunteers for our service to the Shrine and reflecting on the issues of the day that are preventing us from performing our volunteering duties.  My letter had a hand written note across the bottom suggesting that if I happened to be in the area of Government House one day I should pop in for a cuppa and a scone.

The figures below show minimal new infections Australia wide and no new deaths.  Victoria still seems to be dominating the new infections.  The new Victorian infections include a couple more from the abattoir, 3 or 4 international travellers returning and 3 or so from a new cluster based around a MacDonalds store in the Northern suburbs.  Maybe these sorts of figures are the new norm until such time as a vaccine is available.  None of the new infections in Victoria are sick enough to be admitted to ICU or I think even to hospital, so that is good news.

Current Virus Day Stats; Day 129

Vic: 1,523 infected (+9 from previous day) - 18 deaths (increase 0)
Aus: 6,990 infected (+10 from previous day) - 98 deaths (increase 0)
Recovered: 6,295
World: 4,345,646

  1. Receiving a letter from a dignitary acknowledging your service is always heartwarming. It means that someone is paying attention to your efforts. I would keep that letter and one day, in the very near future, I would go to Gov't House and I would have that scone and a cuppa. I met Dame Quentin Bryce whilst working overseas and it was amazing to see how she worked the room. But I couldn't help but think that she left you feeling like she pissing in your pocket and convincing you that it was raining but it was a memorable experience none the less. A 'warm' experience (pardon the pun).

Yesterday's blog listed certain features and memorable moments. My highlight was actually getting to put my name on my profile so I was no longer, anonymous. But that was soon shattered by my lost post. I am guessing that post is floating in the stratosphere somewhere like so many other Ethernet posts. Ah, the age of modern communication still astounds me.

I now look forward to monitoring the economy and as an aside, I asked for your opinion on MMT. MMT stands for Modern Monetary Theory which in short, governments make up money. A bit like what the USA is doing on a daily basis to prop up the stock market. Create a trillion dollars overnight electronically and hit the send button. Maybe this could be a new blog and rather than have what's in the pantry Graeme, it could be what's in the bank Graeme. I would love to read the comments that little blog would generate. I would say that discussions with Derick around the campfire about the CFMEU would pale into insignificance with what's in the bank Graeme.

    1. You are right about the way these people work a room. When we had a real morning tea with the Guv last year she and her husband spoke to everyone in the room at some stage or another, made everybody feel very welcome and important. Maybe there is a school for incoming Governors that teach them how to do these things.

I didn't make a comment about MMT because I know nothing about it. I know that doesn't usually stop me having an opinion about something but in this case it did. It sounds to me like this would be something that would be generating a lot of comment, possibly ill informed, in various Facebook forums, possibly the same forums that claim that the corona virus is being spread by 5G mobile phone towers. Feel free to set up a MMT blog and I will contribute.
