Blog Day 56: Monday 18 May 2020
Although traffic is building up a little it is still a lot less than usual so why do bicycle riders seem to think that it is OK to ride on the bloody footpath!!!!
Got that off my chest, again.
You will all be pleased to know that a book that I ordered some 4 weeks ago has been delivered today. It is called "Clash of the Gods of War" subtitled "Australian Artillery and the Firepower Lessons of the Great War". If anybody wants to borrow it let me know. During TGW the BEF artillery (including the AIF) fired 170,385,295 rounds of artillery ammunition on the Western Front. No wonder they are still digging it up, and it is still dangerous and killing people.
Please find below the weekly table of virus infections and deaths for selected countries. I have added Belgium, Russia and Brazil to this week's table. I have also resorted it to run from the highest deaths per million of population to the lowest. You will see that Belgium is the highest with 754 deaths per million and, on this table at least, New Zealand and Australia are the lowest with 4 deaths per million.
New Zealand didn't have any new deaths for the week and Australia recorded only 2. The US recorded 10,000 deaths for the week but still have a reasonable rate per million compared to Spain, Italy, UK and France. Brazil has recorded 16,000 deaths in total which at the moment, given its large population, isn't reflected in the deaths per million.
The scary thing is that with only a 1,000 plus deaths in the last week Spain, Italy and France have seen fit to relax their isolation rules and talk about opening their borders to tourism!

Went into the city/office today, departed from home later to avoid crowds and was rewarded with a mostly empty tram. Cleaning army were still everywhere and a few more cafes open in my laneway for takeaway, but clearly prepping for the future.
ReplyDeleteThere is a bit of activity around here as well, the interior fit out of the pub is continuing, one of the cafes that closed completely has reopened and the local gym has tradies in there doing some sort of refurbishment work.
