Blog Day 79: Wednesday 10 June 2020

Just waiting to join a Zoom meeting with the Shrine.  One of the Shrine curators is going to be talking about his new exhibition on the sinking of the hospital ship Centaur by a Japanese submarine in the second world war.  Neil, the Shrine curator has just finished his talk about the new Centaur exhibition.  It is another exhibition centred around contemporary art and is designed to attract visitors to the Shrine outside of the usual military, remembrance and commemoration cohort.  The art for this exhibition is by a Melbourne artist, Dean Bowen, and comprises some charcoal drawings based on the Centaur disaster plus other items of interest including paintings, posters and artefacts. (The term charcoal drawing sounds very simplistic but they are far more complex than how they sound).

2/3 Australian Hospital Ship Centaur was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the Qld coast during the night of 14 May 1943.  The ship was heading north to Port Moresby with 332 nurses, doctors, servicemen and crew on board. Out of the 332 only 64 people survived the sinking.  The ship was marked with red crosses and fully lit up as required by the Geneva convention.  The sinking of this ship was a war crime of significant proportions.

We still don't know when the Shrine will be reopening, various other museums and galleries have announced that they are reopening around the weekend of the 27th of June albeit with restricted entry and controls over access and numbers.  Just had a look at the AWM website, they are reopening on 1st July with ticketed and timed access.

Hopefully the AWM research centre will be opening shortly as I am planning to go there as soon as access is freely available.  I will also be looking to attend the National Archives so will need access there as well and accommodation in Canberra for a few days.

There has been 4 new infections recorded in Victoria in the last 24 hours and 7 recorded Australia wide.  Of the Victorian infections 1 was located at a disability service centre in Chelsea, 1 was from the Rydges hotel cluster and 2 were discovered in routine testing.  Still no further deaths Australia wide.  Here is food for thought, Australia's total number of infections is less than the number of virus related deaths in Brazil in the last week.

Corona Virus Daily Stats: Day 156

Vic: 1,691 infected (+4 from previous day) - 19 deaths (increase 0)
Aus: 7,274 infected (+7 from previous day) - 102 deaths (increase 0)
Recovered: 6,726
World: 7.227,791 infected - 411,009 deaths (increase 4,607 from previous day)

Comments

  1. Found it interesting today on the ABC was a comment that the number of reported 'flu cases in Australia in May 2020 was 200 compared to 30,000 for May 2019 (I think these were the numbers). So evidently our lockdown/iso has been of some use.
