Blog Day 119 - Tuesday 21 July 2020

Tuesday is Shrine volunteer Zoom meeting day.  This morning, apart from some general chit chat amongst the volunteers and Shrine staff we reviewed and discussed the first episode of the SBS series Das Boot.  This is a made for television series based on the book and movie of the same name.  Next week we are discussing the Australian movie "The Lighthorsemen".  I don't think that I have seen the movie so I will have to watch it this week so I can contribute in a positive way to the discussion.

No good news with today's virus stats, Victoria has recorded 374 new infections in the last 24 hours, the second highest figure for the entire pandemic.  We have also had 3 more deaths all females in their 80's, 90's and 100's.  Two of these deaths are as a result of the spread of the virus through the aged care and nursing home system.  It would appear that aged care facilities and nursing homes are heavily reliant on casual and contract staff.  These staff are poorly paid and work at more than one facility to work enough hours to earn enough to live on.  Match this up with staff who continue to work whilst infected because they can't afford to lose their wage and we have a recipe for disaster.  Maybe a royal commission or judicial enquiry will be necessary into the management or control of the virus in the aged care sector.

As we can see Victoria is at day 13 of the new lockdown period and there has been no meaningful reduction in the number of new infections.  On the other hand we haven't exceeded the figure of 428 new infections on 17/07, so maybe that is good news.  Victorian hospital and ICU figures continue to increase with 27 admissions to hospital for a total of 174 corona patients currently in Victorian hospitals.  There were 5 admissions to ICU in Victoria in the last 24 hours resulting in a total of 36 patients currently in ICU.

Worldwide infections are continuing at around the 200,000 plus per day and over 4,000 deaths per day.

Remember to work from home when you can, wash your hands, keep your distance, keep your mask on, sneeze into your elbow (yuk), don't touch your face, press the traffic light button with your foot, eat your vegies, don't ride your bike on the footpath, sanitize often and be kind.

  1. Lucy woke up with a fever over 100F so we had to head off to the Alfred to get tested today. She did a great job and was far better at it than I was... Results in 1-3days. So that's 2 tests for me so far this pandemic. If we continue with face-to-face teaching, no doubt I'll have to get tested again. Thankfully all students and staff will be wearing masks from Thursday. I went to the pharmacy yesterday to pick up some masks and the pharmacist was quite shocked to learn we teachers have to provide for our own personal protective equipment. I like the way pollies bandy around the phrase "front line staff", and then don't protect us... Oh well - should be tax deductible Taz?

    1. Hope your test results turn out OK. Don't know about the tax deductibility of your face masks, but then again I am not a tax accountant.

    1. Maybe we could take a page out of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and get ourselves marooned on a desert island for a few years, until this is all over.
