Blog Day 120 - Wednesday 22 July 2020

As it will be compulsory to wear a mask outdoors from 11.59pm today I decided to wear a mask on my walk today as sort of a test run.  No great difficulty although as has been previously mentioned the mask does fog your glasses up.

Rigged and ready to go in these days of corona virus. Hats on, earphones in and mask on!

We are still waiting on today's figures to be announced but the word on the street is that the new infections will be in the high 400s.  Still no mention of a stage 4 lockdown but a 5km isolation zone is a possibility.  This means that you are not allowed to go anywhere outside of a 5km radius of your home address.

I understand the hesitation with going to a level four lockdown, but if it is inevitable, and it is looking more and more likely, lets do it and get it over and done with.  Level four could be short and sharp, say 2 weeks, limited exceptions and no loopholes.

The breakfast guys on 3AW this morning had the right idea, if your question is "Can I............"? the answer is "NO"!  If you have to ask you already know the answer.

The figures for the last 24 hours have been announced.  Australia wide 501 new infections were recorded, unfortunately 484 of these were in Victoria with the balance in NSW.  This is the highest figure for Victoria for the entire pandemic.  We seem to be setting new records, if not daily, at least every couple of days.  No mention yet of going to level four lockdown,  Victoria reported two more deaths, both elderly men who were residents of nursing homes.

The AMA is calling for an immediate escalation of the the lockdown to level four.  There is some discussion about the "reproduction rate".  Apparently this is the rate that one infected person infects another and a rate less than 1 is ideal.  Victoria's reproduction rate is currently 1.2 which means that every infected person infects 1.2 other people, which means the number of infections are increasing.

Australian and worldwide figures are in the tables below.  The world figures are recording at least 200,000 new infections per day with the last 24 hours recording 244,000.  Over 6,000 deaths were recorded worldwide for the last 24 hours.

Remember: to ask "are you OK"?, to work from home when you can, wash your hands, keep your distance, keep your mask on, sneeze into your elbow (yuk), don't touch your face, press the traffic light button with your foot, eat your vegies, don't ride your bike on the footpath, sanitize often and be kind.

  1. Unfortunately after about 65 free days we have now 1 case in hospital in the south of the state. Hopefully no others as she was in hotel quarantine after returning from Victoria.
