Blog Day 121 - Thursday 23 July 2020

Day one of compulsory mask wearing today.  On my walk I saw two adults not wearing masks, one was a lady jogger and the other was an old codger wearing a scarf over his mouth but not covering his nose.  This exception for runners and bike riders has still got me beat.  If you can't run or ride your bike wearing a mask find some other way of exercising.  The other thing I noticed was that there were less people around, maybe the mask thing is reminding people how serious this is.

Nice story, when I went into the bakery (essential supplies) I naturally took my hat off, as a gentleman does when indoors, and the lady there complimented me on my manners.

Many thanks to those of my readers who have offered suggestions, both on and off blog, on how to stop my glasses fogging up whilst wearing a mask, some of them even printable.  However as often seems to be the case these days I have moved to Plan B.  Plan B is not wearing glasses at all and taking my chances with tripping over small dogs and children and bumping into phone boxes and the like.

The daily figures have reported an increase of 403 new infections in Victoria, this is down in the previous day's figure of 484 but still one of the highest figures recorded.  Victoria has recorded a futher five deaths, a male in his 50's, a male and a female in their 70's, a male in his 80's and a male in his 90's.  The female and the males in their 80's and 90's were all residents of aged care facilities.  We haven't been told if they were in the same facility or not.  The circumstances surrounding the infections and deaths in the aged care facilities will need to be investigated at some time.  I wonder if there is the possibility of criminal charges being laid, is there such a thing as criminal negligence?

The daily world figures have worryingly shown a larger than usual increase in new infections and virus related deaths.  Lets hope that is an aberration and the next few day show things getting back to "normal"

The traditional European countries of Spain, Italy and France still seem to have things under control with each reporting less than 100 deaths in the last week.  The UK reported 448 deaths which believe it or not is a good result for them.  Brazil reported more than 7,000 deaths, USA 6,000 and Mexico over 4,000 for the week.  South America seems to be the current hot spot with Peru and Chile also reporting significant numbers of infections and deaths.  South Africa is reporting significant infection rates but that doesn't seem to be translating into a high death rate, what is their secret?

Remember: to ask "are you OK"?, to work from home when you can, wash your hands, keep your distance, keep your mask on, sneeze into your elbow (yuk), don't touch your face, press the traffic light button with your foot, eat your vegies, don't ride your bike on the footpath, sanitize often, keep your glasses unfogged and be kind.
